Videredo Gone? Alternatives?

My hard drive crashed and I bought a new computer, only to find out that videoredo is no longer downloadable, and I have been using it a lot lately. I have an old version on an older computer (I think version 4). Does anyone know if it's gone for good? Is there other software that works well with Tivo? What video editors would anyone recommend whether they work with .tivo files or not?

Thanks!

It could just be the servers down and should be back up tomorrow?

The key is not verified online, but it is attached/derived from the name of the registered user/owner of the license.

I'm going to go with "temporary", because I just tried, and it is already gone. :(

I was hoping to grab some updates, because I just paid for an upgrade in April. But I never bothered downloading anything, because the version I was (am) running was working fine.

I just "assumed" (ha ha) they would always be around, so what's the rush? Whenever they have a "for sale" upgrade I just automatically buy it, to support them. Because their development has always been continuous.

If Dan is looking for a job, that tells me the situation is dire. :( While I hope they can get things back under control, I also hope they can at least make their more recent updates available to the loyal customers, who have supported them for many, many years.

To be clear, the activation page at videoredo.net is still up. As are the Forums there. But videoredo.com is down, and going to the videoredo.net home page routes you to the .com site, which is down.

Also, any links in the Forum (that I saw), taking you to the Downloads, don't take you anywhere.

But the button in the Beta thread does download the Beta version, in the background. Which I realized after hitting the Go To Downloads button 3 times. Ha ha. (Hey, it does say "Go to...")

OK, I did a bit more looking around, and found that DanR is "currently very ill". :( Which is a real shame. He is the one who has access to the .com site, which is why it is currently down.

DanH has been working overtime to try and find various workarounds, and has made the latest versions available on the .net site (whose server he controls). And then later also set up a parallel Activation page and Upgrade Wizard there, so people who bought can get their version working. Which I personally think is amazing, since he's getting no compensation for this.

Start reading here for the full scoop on what's going on. And links to the Downloads, and Activations, further down.

Morning Dan! I'm a VRD guy since V3. I use V5 exclusively now, but I bought the 6 upgrade in 2019. I have a V6 "Upgrade Token", but never installed it.

So yesterday, I tried to install V5 on a Win10 'puter & since I have & entered the key, I was able to make the "Manual Activation" button pop up. It's not just THERE, automatically. Once it popped, no problem, VRD 5 activated.

So I tried to do 6. Did the install. Then did Help >> Enter Software Key. The Reg/Act screen pops up. The button choices are "Purchase an Upgrade To Version 6" & "Recover My Key". Both link you to the Web Site. The fill in box is, "Name & Key". So I punch in name & my Upgrade Token. I get something back like "Oh, you're trying to upgrade." then it sends me to the web site. So then I enter my V5 key. It didn't like that either. Now it's stuck on "Temporary Key can't be used, enter Permanent Key".

SO..., the question is, how can I get the Manual Activation button to pop-up in 6??? I'm HOPING you're going to say "wait till the Trial Period ends"..., but I FEAR you're gonna say, "you're SOL, Buck-A-Roo"!! Whudda ya think, Dan?

Thanks!!!

@Dan203 Thanks for everything you've done to keep VideoReDo going. I've found nothing else that does what it does as well as it does it.

If you ever manage to get in touch with his wife, perhaps suggest a contribution to a charitable cause for allowing you to post a freeware version. I'm sure a few of us here would be willing to contribute something.

Or perhaps posting as donation software or a PWYW? Something that might generate some income for her.

Just some ideas.

And with those suggestions I would like to acknowledge that you've already gone above and beyond anything that was expected or required.

Kind of by accident actually.

In 2005 I wrote a video player app that TiVo actually purchased from me. Flying high on that success I decided to write an app that could convert TiVo files to DVDs. I had planned to use an open source library (can’t remember the name) for actually creating the DVDs but it required the video have something called "null packets" inserted for it to work. I found two things that could do that. A DirectShow filter from some Russian guy that was licensed on a per install basis and VideoReDo. So I sent an email to VideoReDo explaining what I was working on and asking if they’d be willing to license me their muxer so I could use it in my project. The owner, who was a casual member of this forum and knew who I was, responded saying that they didn’t do that but that they wanted to add DVD authoring to VideoReDo and offered to hire me to do it. I accepted. Initially it was just a side gig, but after about 6 months of working on this and a few other small projects for him he offered me a full time job. I was working at my father’s print shop at the time, making $28k/year. This job paid $50/hour. So I accepted. Me and him got along great and I ended up working with him for almost 17 years before his sudden death.

@Dan203 Hi Dan, I recently read that the other Dan died. Such a shame. I have VRD versions 45 & 6. What is the exact situation then? Are the forums never going to be reactivated, and is that the end of VRD? What is the situation?
Pretty much. If something changes and I somehow get permission to do something with the source I'll let you guys know, but as of now VRD is dead.

I have been using VRD for many years and am one of the sad folks. REALLY sad because I have an older version that cannot read the new format that files from Tivo and sent in. I finally got pyTIVO to load the files on my PC but my old version of VRD can't read them [H.264/AVC video not supported]. Is there any way I can get a newer version of VRD that can read the files? I see downloads for the latest version but I don't see where I would get the user token and system id that would enable me to register/use the new version.

You may find a solution here: https://www.reddit.com/r/videoredo/comments/18nydtp/manual_act...

I am no longer using VRD myself, but see for example this reply: "After installation is completed, instead of using the automatic activation, you choose manual. It will show a User token and System ID, which you enter into the website. It generates a Activation token, which you enter into VRD."
