I don't come to this forum for anything Tivo related anymore.
Yea this place feels more like I am hanging around guys I met in college. It’s old and comfortable. Facebook, Reddit, Nextdoor, …are just a bit too large and they are way too algorithm focused.

Depending on Tivo's overhead, they might make it another 5 years. Now might be a good time to look for alternatives. Does anyone have any recommendations, if any exist?

Aren't Tivos going to be in plentiful supply for the foreseeable future on the used market, - that is where I have often bought mine?

Or am I missing something here? (And it snot that the company cannot survive without revenue from selling devices)

Used Tivos will be especially plentiful after cable cos move to IPTV only. ;)

Yeah but isn't that having a very extended rollout? Certainly as far as FIOS is concerned.
I don't know when the hammer will drop. Just that it will and that the move has been ongoing for years in the form of moving new customers and broken boxes to new boxes that support the new dark arts. AT some point, it reaches escape velocity or whatever I wanted to call it that I forgot.

(I always think of the Kmart in my area that was still around when I moved here over 15 years ago and how it obviously was destined for the dustbin. But ...it dragged on 8 years or so. EVery year the store got emptier in goods and people. But people still went there. It didn't wait for there to be zero customers before it closed. ;) Just service got gradually poorer and shelves barer until it reached escape velocity.)

AT the same time (ie trying to think on the bright side for the diehard tivo crowd,) millions leave cable every year, which arguably could mean a prolonging of the move to IPTV. You gotta think the customers that are left are on a percentage basis, older, more set in their ways, and more likely to have old equipment and have more disposable income. I am picturing my Mom. (Maybe that's projecting more than anything.) She pays too much for her total xFinity package and still records/deletes shows as if she can't watch all 20+ seasons of NCIS and its spinoffs without commercials on Paramount+ anytime. But she has enough in the bank for the bill to not be a concern.

The counter to that, is well given the millions of wallets leaving every year, supporting legacy for fewer folks just gets more expensive, and IPTV being much cheaper (and more fungible) means we (said cable companies) should accelerate the move to IPTV. And there is some headway being made by some cable companies to be an all in one package for streaming service apps. Some have gotten the apps included the cable package customers get with new recent carriage deals like the one between Charter and Disney iirc. Which only means more content over IP sort to speak. And in my Mom example, she might actually be watching via 'IPTV' on a newish box. It seems slow enough to meet the definition. ;)

And with the orange man in office, feels like the regulators are in place to be pro-'whatever cable wants to do.'

does it matter that someone like me doesn't watch much production filml company work such as NCIS or Netflix for that matter? I watch mainly non fiction such as news analysis and the sort of thing that is on public tv channels like PBS.

I only stay with your mum's expensive cable companies because the streaming services don't seem to offer all that much if what I watch

"You can enjoy episodes of popular programs like PBS NewsHour and Frontline on the PBS website and app without needing to pay." - PBS website.

But I digress. IN a nutshell future Tivo compatibility is what you're missing when you asked if you were missing anything. ;)
