My foster dog (Pitbull/Great Dane mix) decided the Tivo peanut remote might actually taste like peanuts. I plan on ordering a new one in the next few days but was wondering if there was a workaround for my dilemma below.

I would like to set up the network remote control feature. However, this requires I have a thumbs up button. This feature is not available on my cheapy universal remote. So anyone able to come up with a creative work around? Is there anyway to telnet into the unit without enabling network support or even via USB/IEEE1394 in order to send the thumbs up command to the Tivo?

I know that you would just think "wait to get a remote or go buy the glo remote" but A) don't want to spend 50 bucks on a remote that has horrid ratings and B) The 100 dollar + Harmony remotes are just overkill for me.

I would love to get my Tivo functioning through my laptop tonight if at all possible since using this universal is just aggravating as all... &*&$

All of my friends either have cable company DVRs or nothing at all... so borrowing a remote for 5 minutes isn't an option.

This is on a TIVO HD

Seems there is a chicken or egg problem here. He needs the thumbs up key in order to set up network remote access.

Many cheap universal remotes have the ability to send "advanced codes". I'm sure the thumbs up advanced code is posted here somewhere if you search for it. This is most likely to work if you have a "one for all" (URC) branded remote. One of these even has the thumbs up/down keys link, although that model doesn't have the latest tech and may not be your best choice. You might be able to find one for all remotes at Walmart. I know they've carried them in the past.

If your universal remote has learning features (which I assume it does) head down to your local Best Buy and ask them to use their demo TiVo remote for a few minutes. Then you can teach yours the thumbs buttons.

Thanks for understanding :)

I ended up borrowing my neighbor's remote which had learning features. Got the network setup on Tivo and then began using the Python script. Works wonderfully!
