OK... I hate season threads, but yes...I am starting one.

Master Chef Season 10 is already halfway through, and it seems either no one is watching, or no one is interested in talking about it by the episode. I just bing watched half the season (it's been sitting on my TiVo queue since the beginning of June, and I only got to it the last week).

Great season so far!!!

Some random (and out of temporal order) comments:
  • Evan was arrogant... Glad he went early... He didn't seem to want to accept any coaching, and was pretty stubborn.
  • Michael and Nick were both pretty good leaders in the group challenge where they had to replicate 3 dishes from one of Joe's restaurants.
  • Sad that Keturah was eliminated in a BBQ challenge with no BBQ experience. Doesn't prove she cannot cook, just that she doesn't have BBQ experience. Oh well, that's how these shows are designed. Same as a rock singer forced to sing country in American Idol, or a ballet dancer forced to do hip-hop in So You Think You Can Dance.
  • Loved that Wuta was vegatarian, but still was able to do well on protein challenges. I also loved that Micah and Noah are allergic to shell fish and both do well in the shellfish challenges!
  • I hate losing Fred!!! Argh!
  • I like Noah, though he didn't give me a great first impression on the first group challenge that he led. Too bossy. But overall, I have really grown to like him.
  • I like Shari (Midwest woman who specializes in Indian Cuisine), Michael & Nick (the two youngest contestants), and Dorian (okay, yes, throw Noah in the mix too).
  • How is Subah still in the running???

I cringe every time they call it "The 10th Anniversary Season".

No. The 10th season would be the 9th anniversary.

I was also sorry to see Fred go. I thought he might be one of the last few.

And happy to see Evan go. I was getting so sick of him saying how easy a challenge was going to be, and then massively screwing it up, proving he wasn't as skilled as he seemed to think.

Subha's dishes must taste wondrous. It's the one thing we can't judge. OTOH, we can only judge based on what they show us, so they can easily manipulate us. Usually, if they focus on one person's fumbles in a given show, like they have done several times with Subha, that person will not be eliminated in that show.

I cringe too...but not because of the inaccuracy of the use of the word "anniversary"... I just tire of the emphasis on how they are stepping things up for the 10th season (which more accurately describes the milestone). Just little comments like "oh, this would be fine for Season 5, but this is Season 10!". Ugh...

That said, I am enjoying this season overall... :)

I bet you are talking about Renee Rice (Receptionist from Ada, OK). My wife and I were pretty irritated by her as well. She kept claiming to be a beef expert, but undercooked the hamburgers in the first challenge, and then was taken off of the grill on a subsequent challenge and put on asparagus. She had a very negative and defeatist attitude. We were glad to see her go.

I did get a karmic kick out of Evan saying stuff like, "You don't get to this point without having these skills..." then cut to Chef Ramsay telling him, "You don't have these skills..." and the like-I know they can edit the show any way they like, but Evan really did seem like a braggart and did not seem like he was there to learn. Good riddance!

It's sort of tough to pay attention in the beginning because there are so many people. I find it more watchable when it gets down to 10 or so. True of various reality shows (Top Chef, Survivor, Amazing Race, Big Brother).

I liked Fred. I wonder if he'll end up working for Christina Toci. And I like Noah (if he's the tall guy with the deadly shellfish allergy). He's fairly down-to-earth, but he did get pretty pissed when his team lost the Nascar challenge.

Subah seems completely clueless, and useless on team challenges. And annoying.

Yeah, I'm getting like that with a lot of the competition-type shows I watch. If there are around 12-16 people, I can't remember much of anything except for maybe the one or two who interest me from the beginning. Don't even get me started on names.

Although, your mention of 'Subah' clicks, as I can picture him. Maybe mostly because of the unusuality of his name. :) (I just made up that word)

I love MasterChef but I wish they would focus more on trying to find the "best home-cook in America". First, I think they should decide eliminations based on the totality of their performance. Subha should have gone home this week, not Fred. Second, I don't like the reality-TV stunts. Like this week the judges encouraged Micah to put a good chef in jeopardy instead of a bad one. Kudos to Micah for choosing Subha instead.

Yeah...none of these shows is purely about finding the best of the bunch... It's not about finding the best dancer, the best singer, the best Vegas act, or the best home cook... Television is a business, and they are trying to maximize the viewership so that they can get the best advertising rates... This is what the networks want, and that's how the producers will secure another season...

If, in the process, they find a great dancer, a great singer, a great Vegas act, and a great home cook, it's a bonus... And the process usually does yield a pretty solid winner, despite the circus act...

Yet again, Subah survives another challenge. After they tasted all the dishes, it was pretty apparent that everyone else had "survivable" criticism, except for Jamie... Must be awkward when Gordon doesn't actually call out your name, but expects you to "step forward" instead... Jamie's great, but not "top 3" material... Subah also isn't "top 3" material and will likely be leaving soon.

In my mind, the top 3 need to have:
  1. Technical cooking skills
  2. Creative plating skills
  3. Leadership and team work skills (in order to run a kitchen as an executive chef)

Interesting article from someone who auditioned for Master Chef, but didn't sign any of the non-disclosure forms, so was able to write an article about the audition process at Salon . com

I am a "MasterChef" survivor

Note: This has NOTHING to do with Season 10, and as a result does NOT contain any Season 10 spoilers. It's definitely an interesting read though (once you close all the ad pop-ups)...

That was a bit terrifying to read. Wow. And it feels like a direct descendant of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" I don't know how I'll feel about it all, going forward.

I've been watching - just saw this thread today.

I think they are editing Subha to be a clumsy fool... I think it was Jamie this week that said Subha should win. And I don't think the judges have ever said his food tasted bad.

I am really going to miss Fred and Jamie - those are the two I was rooting for! Nick is ok. I'm kinda rooting for Bri now. At first I thought she was your typical barbie doll -but she's actually very sensitive. And she was best friends with Fred - so that tells me a lot about her.

I can't stand Noah. He's got the Eddie Haskell fake, smarminess going on for me. So I'm sure he'll win.

Really--interesting. She's either being painted as or is a delicate sort who seems to break down when critiqued--I can't imagine her running a commercial enterprise kitchen (perhaps, yes, a small, "boutique" kitchen or catering service). She also seems to have difficulty, at times, in following the intent of contests, instead substituting what seems to make sense to her. Having said that, I recognize that she does have a flair and style.

I really like Bri and I personally wanted her to survive this week's elimination...

That said, her elimination is kind of inconsequential to the final outcome. Based on her historic performance, I don't think she is "Top 3" material. She excels in plating for sure. I think she is just so-so at leading a kitchen and technical cooking, which would keep her from the Top 3.

Oh crud! I just realized that I didn't finish watching the episode yesterday. Oops! Well, now I'm doubly bummed out about how things went for Micah. After they did all the family introductions I felt horribly for him and then, as the show went on, when they showed certain 'I'm so happy (whoever) is here to support me' type comments they would pan to Micah and it felt kind of cruel. My heart just broke a bit for him and ITA that it sure seems like there would be somebody for him. From what I understood, from what I've viewed so far, his mother is totally not on board with his desire to work in culinary. That is a drag for sure. :( I hope he goes out there and kicks butt.
