Thanks for the details. That makes sense. I experimented with the RF vs A/V composite cables and was wondering why I *saw* no difference, but could *hear* a difference. As you say, both methods deliver the same video quality, but A/V cables deliver stereo sound. That explains it.

You would probably see a difference on a larger TV.

When a cable feed is split, the signal level drops by half or more. If the signal is strong to begin with, that shouldn't be a problem, but if the signal is weak and noisy, splitting can visibly degrade the signal.
 
The "cable guy" (not named Larry, I hope) can adjust the signal level at the pole. Your best bet is to buy a good quality splitter, rated for 900MHz or higher. These cost $10-$20. The $2.99 kind won't cut it.

You can also buy an amplified splitter at RadioShack and other places, but some of these just make the problem worse.
