I also lock in the price for 2 years.
Right, I think most folks do. I think the problem is that once new customers hit the two year mark they become existing customers and are no longer eligible for that great discount they had been getting.

The only problem I had with Cox (after the initial setup) was that when my new customer rate expired my monthly bill would go from $154/month to $310/month.

... or I could switch to FiOS as a new customer and be eligible for their $79.99/month gigabit Internet + TV plan for two years. So that's what I did.

I never thought a bill would impress me, but I like how there's a section on my monthly FiOS bill that clearly shows when the discounts end and what the impact will be. I had to call Cox and talk to a rep to get this information which turned in a big sales pitch.

Accordingly to the bill below, at my two-year mark (next June), I lose $10/mo in discounts. If that holds true, I will probably not be looking to switch to find a better plan back with Cox.

Another thing to consider - Cox in my location sets the CCI byte on all programming except locals. So I can't pull most recordings off the TiVo to the PC for back up. The Stream allows a workaround but not as easy as using pyTiVo.

I don't think Fios is as restrictive.
Yes. The only channels that have the CCI byte on are the formerly owned by Fox cable channels (FX, FXX, NatGeo, etc), HBO, and Cinemax....

One more thing I forgot to mention... Here in RI Fios offers a military discount.... I served in the Army and if you send proof of your DD214 you will get $10.00 per month discount... doesn't sound like much but every little bit helps
Thank you. I am a military veteran and will check this when Verizon activates system here.

If your using a TiVO box, you don't even *need* to use Verizon's router at all.
Interesting. Does this mean you can also use Netflix and other apps on the TiVo through FIOs cable alone? I thought you needed connection to internet (ethernet wired or wireless router) to use TiVo Apps. How do you connect to TiVo server for updates without Verizon cable modem router?

You still need "a" router, but you're not required to use Verizon's router.

At one point, folks using Verizon's set-top boxes were required to use Verizon's router. If not, then Verizon's set-top boxes lost some functionality like guide data, etc. Not sure if that's still true, but if you're not going to use one of their boxes, you shouldn't have to worry about it.

For me, the sign-up precious was a little weird. I signed-up online and had to choose one of their set-top boxes to complete the order. Oh, and there was no option to select a cable card. After the order was placed I had to chat with them to get a cable card added to the order. On install day the installer took the set-top box away with him when he left. I was never billed for it.

If you're looking at their $79.99 gigabit/TV/phone package just a heads up that the TV part of that package doesn't include many HD channels. We ended up choosing the "Preferred HD" package when we signed up. $15/mo more but still kept the bill significantly lower than my Cox bill.

Great rundown on the FIOs bill and quite good price; I am also impressed. thanks. I would just add phone to the package and go for the Preferred HD package as well. It would still be far below what Cox charges now.

Also good to know I can leave my present Orbi mesh system connected to the Verizon network. I presume I'll need a cable modem to connect to Verizon ISP. Must I use Verizon's or can I use a non-rental purchased cable modem?

I believe that Verizon supplies it's own Modem. It is fed from the street with fiber optic cable... No monthly fee... From the Modem they just ran an ethernet cable to my Netgear Router and a coax cable to the TiVo and I was in business. I also have a landline phone and that was part of the install as I recall. It's been a while.

I get the discounts year after year with Cox.

Interesting, that certainly hasn't been folks experience in my market (and it's definitely a talking point in my neighborhood as the neighborhood was recently built and folks are coming up on their Cox expiration date and running into the same 200% price increase that I did).

Would you mind posting an anonymized version of your Cox bill for comparison's sake?

Here's my FiOS bill:

Check this out:

At about 22 seconds in, the "terminal that converts the 100% fiber-optic connection into TV, voice and data" is basically their version of a cable modem.

Cox allows on demand on tivo boxes in Phoenix. Don't forget that
I just moved from Boston (Fios) to Phoenix (Cox)

The conversion was easy, the tuning adapters are fine, Cox is now using ONT gig up and down cable fiber in my area at least

I have had Fios for 12 years, it has been flawless. 2 tech calls in 12 yrs

About to pull my fios in my sold house.
