Hello everyone, I've searched the forums, but can't find the answer to this question. I hope someone can point me in the right direction.

When my Series 3 records something letterboxed (black bars at the top and bottom)from an analog or SD digital channel, I would like to use the Zoom Aspect mode to eliminate the black frame around the picture. When I select the Zoom mode, it seems to cut off too much. Is there a way to adjust the amount of zoom?

Thanks,

Martin

No, there is no way to adjust the zoom.

I haven't noticed the Tivo cutting off too much. Are you sure it is not overscan on your TV cutting off your picture?

No, unfortunately not.

It really should have 2 zoom modes: one like the current that zooms correctly on a TV without overscan, and one that would take, say, 5% overscan into account (that seems to be a common percentage overscan).

I assume he knows that is the problem, since he put that in the subject line, and that is what the question is about. :)

I measured the letterboxed image of Battlestar Galactica when output in 480p and got a width to height ratio of roughly 1.63. A standard zoom to a 1.78 screen is going to clip off some of the top and bottom in addition to what the overscan clips. If I use 720p output (with graybars), the letterboxed image is close to 1.78 (slightly wider and shorter) but the image doesn't meet gray sidebars. Does anyone know if the mask for BSG is 16x9 or is it some compromise ratio between 1.78 and 1.33?

My TV zooming the 480p image clips a little less than the TiVo zooming a 720p upconvert.
