YouTube to downgrade resolution

A note today in Engadget says that to reduce its load on the Internet, YouTube is going to default to standard resolution for some period of time. The article also says that this can be overridden in "settings."

Question: Are these settings available in the TiVo app on our boxes? (I'm running a Roamio Pro with two Minis.)

Can’t imagine anyone would want to override. That would be unpatriotic! :rolleyes: This amounts to voluntary rationing. The good will suffer while the selfish don’t.

My understanding is they will not degrade resolution for YouTube TV. If they do, they better reduce the subscription cost!

I thought this an 'interesting thread' and maybe deserves some conversation. I've never used YTTV and being an Xfinity CC user, having a Roku Ultra and also the ATV+ subscription I did a CBS ALL Access promotion along with that. The Apple 'content' on ATV+ was certainly outstanding on my 1080P Plasma, CBS ALL Access with ads I didn't pay much attention to but changed that to 'no ads' and watched I'd say much content and I was quite happy. Far from 'thrilled' as I was in 2012 when I did the 1080P Plasma purchase but very happy.

NETFLIX I can't say that I've ever been impressed with the visual quality but it's good watching.

I really believe all of these 'streaming outfits' compress their video to various degrees.

I had T-Vision (L3TV) for sometime because I didn't think I wanted to part with physical DVR storage and visual quality was very good but not a dramatic improvement.

I'd think it might be interesting if someone compared some CBS (YTTV) vs CBS ALL Access for a 'picture quality comparison. CBS is a 1 month free trial.

I'm good with Xfinity CC until likely 'THE END' but some of the Premium Streaming is certainly interesting.

Maybe the most interesting aspect of CBS ALL Access w/ads was maybe 15%+ of the ads were for the new AT&T TV venture!! Where's @NashGuy - I don't believe I've seen an AT&T 'push' here for better than 45 days.

I'd be interested if someone with NO TV PROVIDER using only OTA could see if the LIVE TV works with the CBS-AA portal. I've different answers from 3 inquiries. My location & Xfinity automatically gives me WUSA-9 WASH DC but many in my location actually prefer BALTO WJZ-13. CBS has a posting of 200+ locals but some CSR say you must have an affiliation. They hint it needs to be a 'provider' and not just an affiliation with a local in some fashion that provides services to the web also. There's a good bit of content on CBS and if you could do LIVE TV as well as next day VOD with 'no ads' that would be very convenient I'd think. Great PQ/resolution vs OTA etc.

*I'm quite pleased with it and as erratic as SkipMode has been maybe it's not out of the question to continue.

That sounds wrong, I've had CBS AA from the beginning and you should be getting the CBS afflilate feed according to your billing zip code. It was originally only the CBS owned and operated stations but it has been expanded since then. I use OTA and ATT TV Now but the CBS AA app doesn't know that,I never chose a provider . Try the app for a month, if nothing else you can take advantage of the content in it (and there is a lot in there).

I believe that with so many taking advantage of the 'FREE TRIALS' they're inundated with questions and have little time to actually answer questions accurately. The 'billing zip code' explains much but who gets the choice for someone in a zip code midway between 2 affiliates where both are available OTA. When it becomes an invoicing subscription it might be an easier conversation. I don't speak so questions/conversations become a bit more difficult. They never 'asked' provider but they certainly know the Internet provider without asking questions! For me it's not actually an issue.

* Using TMM Jefferson County WV 25414 would put me in the WUSA-9 market.
* I had my Niece use my 'info' in upstate NY and it defaulted to the TMM listed for their county by TMM.

If you force it back to the top resolution, it seems to stick. I did that and now I'm getting 1080p or 4k depending on what's available for that video. I've had no bandwidth issues. I hate Cox, but they've done alright in the past few weeks, with no slowdowns, and YouTube and Netflix have been fine in 4k and even 8k when I test 8k on my PC (I don't have an 8k monitor, I'm just streaming in 8k).
