Anyone with a router knows when you view the attached devices of your router you will see the device name and the mac address of the item connected... anyway, I know mac addresses cannot be changed but can the device name of the tivo be changed like right now for everyone id assume it looks something like this (TIVO-1234567890EFDCD) the numbers being your TiVo's TSN... but back to the question is it possible to change the device name thats shown for your TiVo... I would explain why but its kind of hard to explain, but if requested to give soem explination as to why I'd like to do this I will, Thx in adavnce.

You can see the mac address with the online router setup program, but the unit does not show up on the computer as a network device.

from live tv > TiVo button twice to get to the now playing screen > hit the zero button > hit the Thumbs down button.

You will now see the name and the TSN on the TV Set of every TiVo you own hooked up via broadband.

Edit: I also think the MAC shows up too. Can't check from this location.

That shortcut (which takes you to the advanced troubleshooting screen for Transfers) currently only works on the S2 boxes though (or rather, boxes on which TTG is enabled).

And no, it doesn't show the MAC address, just the TSN.

I am not sure what you are trying to do with it once you rename the Tivos, but there are 2 options that I have used.

The first depends on your router software. I have an Actiontec router (provided with Verizon FIOS service) that allows me to assign names to any connected device and assign a specific DHCP address to the device. This has the added bonus of adding the selected name to my local DNS, so I can do things like open a web browser and just type in my tivo name to open the default web page.

The second is built into the Tivo, though it is of limited use. The Tivo uses Apple's Bonjour (aka rendezvous) and uses the name you gave the Tivo in your account settings on tivo.com. Any Bonjour enabled application can see the tivo, such as Apple's Safari web browser. Both Bonjour and Safari are available from Apple for windows and are built in on macs.

If you are just naming them for MRV (transferring programs between tivos) you can do this from your account settings on tivo.com.
