Ok...I just called TiVo and they said no one else had complained about this problem. After the 9.1 update my S3 TiVo has become basically unresponsive (and it has gotten progressively worse). It locks up. After a reboot it finally comes to menus, and it takes about 15 minutes for anything to come up after each key press. It is completely unmodified (OTA only, no cable cards or even basic cable, and using ethernet) and was working great with the previous software version.

(Edit: Now it has started rebooting about 20 min after it freezes)

They gave me a case number and told me that if they hear of anyone else with the same problem that they'll have their engineers look into it...but I can call back and check up on the issue if I don't hear back from them.

Anyone else experiencing this?

The actual problem or the 'Gee...you are the only one...' brush off?
Both...I actually called back and made them transfer me to the HD people. He sent it into diagnostic mode, it's doing something for three hours (I assume reinstalling the software) and he said if that doesn't fix it call back.

So, diagnostics mode only stayed there for like 20 minutes....not the three hours it was supposed to. Called back and it looks like they want to replace the machine. While that's a great solution, it doesn't help my problem of all the shows I have stored on there (including NBC shows I can't just get off of iTunes) or having to re set up all of my season passes, suggestions, etc! Argh...

Plus they want to charge me $49 to replace it AND pay for shipping back when it was TiVo's software update that caused the problem and not anything I did (e.g., not a hardware problem, etc).

Edit: Ended up complaining and they're not charging me the $49 and are sending a label to ship it back to me.

What? Don't they have a six hour diagnostic to determine why the three hour diagnostic only ran 20 minutes??????????

Are you tacking on a couple bucks for loss of service in the interim? How about $1.99 per TV episode lost?
:p

Eh, I'm not going to complain about loss of service...I'm just hoping it comes quickly because I need my shows!

If you are adventurous and comfortable with these things, try this:

Take out the drives from the old and new S3. Copy the new drive to the old drive and see if the old S3 runs with the old drive. What version is it? If not 9.1 wait for 9.1 to install and see if it works on the old S3 this time.

Bonus points: If the old S3 now works, tell 'em you repaired the old S3 and offer them $150 for it instead of shipping it back, along with an MSD $6.95 sub (commit up to 1 yr in the negotiation.)

Why not take out the old hdd and swap it into the new unit? Forget about copying it. If it works, bingo, it's a keeper. If not, you are where you hoped not to be.

That's worth a shot first, but if it doesn't get the job done you gotta try what I said.

Its a good idea to boot up the new S3 first and run guided setup and check it out to confirm it works in its original state.

Well, if the problem is the hdd, why wouldn't the OP simply buy a new hdd? I'm assuming it is a hardware problem. If it is an hdd problem, then it does not make much sense getting a replacement just to copy the hdd. The OP could just copy the hdd now and try out a new hdd. It would be the same end effect that you are offering, unless I'm missing something.

He's already getting the new S3. That boat has sailed.

No point in assuming anything at all about what is broken. However, pretty much the only thing we know how to do is copy/swap HDDs.

Copying the OLD drive probably will do nothing. You'll just copy some bad stuff. If he has another (3rd) drive to copy the OLD drive to (without spending more $$ buying one - unless the chance to keep the old recordings is worth the money) then fine, try it. But you are not going to do anything to alter or that might damage the new S3's drive in any way.

Is there a way to attach an external drive to the S3 unit to swap out his programs he would like to retain?

Reason I asked is I bought a PS3 two days ago, an today I found an external HD to add to the internal 60 GB drive... A 160 GB USB device at Best Buy

If your problem was the software then everyone would be experiencing your problem. You have a hardware problem, most likely a failing hard drive. My 9.1 has worked perfectly for two weeks now. No complaints.

Chase, you're not alone, not even close to alone. Mine has the same exact problems and I ran both the KS57 and KS 58 routines with no long term benefit. The machine has been responsive sometimes and then goes away again, they said the HDD is failing which is a load of crap since it would more likely completely die than work, not work, work etc.

It think they really need to recall this update and do more testing.

Hopefully the box I'm getting (soon I hope *crosses fingers*) won't exhibit the same problem.

It was the KS 57 routine that I ran before that did nothing for me.
