Well, it won't make magic happen. But it is an excellent device and will convert digital signals into clear sharp pictures. But to do that takes two important things. A good signal in, and a good TV to display the sharp picture. If your signal is weak or "dirty" you'll probably get a badly pixelated picture and sound dropping out.

If you don't get cable cards (normally by upgrading to a digital package, but not necessary or so I've read ), your picture may not improve much over your TV 's tuner.

Of course, if you can pick up digital OTA channels those will look very nice. :)

if you're using either s-video or the a/v (yellow red and white) inputs to your tv now and your tv has component inputs (red, green and blue), the picture quality should improve noticibly (the TiVo HD has component outputs).
