Hi,

I have a standard definition Samsung DirecTv Tivo receiver (series 2, I believe). It works great. I am upgrading my service to HD and I am adding a DirecTv HD DVR. That upgrade includes upgrading my dish from a dual lnb to the "slim dish (5 lnb)", sorry if I have the terms confused. My question is, will my existing Samsung DirecTv Tivo continue to work with this upgrade? I really don't want to get rid of it. The DirecTv customer service person says it will but I would like confirmation from someone who may have a similar setup.

Yes. it did when I went from dual LNB round to a three LNB Oval and the five LNB just means you are pointing at 5 different satellites so you can get all the new HD channels. Enjoy them. Your SD will still work.

The dishes are all backwards compatible. Until the hard drive dies your Samsung should keep on working for years to come.

As long as you can buy EIDE hard drives, even a drive failure won't spell permanent doom for the unit

That's what I'm planning on doing. Keep the old one in the bedroom and the new HD DVR for the new tv and use the new slim dish.

Actually it may NOT work. Recently Directv has been installing SWM dishes which only have one cable coming out. SWM stands for single wire multiswitch. They have 8 streams on one cable that can be put into a wide band splitter and sent to 8 different receivers. A friend of mine was installed about a month ago and the installer told me all installations were done with SWM dishes. His was a new install and he only had one HD DVR. Tivo and other equipment from that era won't work with a SWM dish.

If they install a standard 5LNB Dish than you will be just fine. You should call and make sure that they do not put a SWM dish up. By the way, the SWM dish they put up only had the center LNB for 99, 101 and 103. They are no longer routinely putting up the LNB assembly that also picks up 110 and 119. My friend could not get any channels in the 70s. No big deal since they are located elsewhere.

The 70s are legacy MPEG2 channels that are being discontinued. The MPEG4 versions are available on different channels.

They won't install a SWM dish if you have legacy receivers. Or at least if you tell them you have legacy receivers before the install.

to the OP - you didn't tell us what DMA you're in, but if in your market, you need a 2nd 18" dish for locals, (like mine) eventually your SD Tivo will NOT be able to get your locals. This is because in those markets, they are migrating ALL locals over to the Ka birds in MPEG4, REGARDLESS if they are in SD or HD. In those case, D* normally will switch out D-Tivo's to the R22 SD MPEG4 DVR.

But as long as you do NOT have this 2nd 18" now, then you won't have any problems with the Slimline, as long as they do NOT use the SWiM feedhorn on it as runch pointed out...

I am in the San Francisco market. I ordered the HD DVR for my new HD TV, and I have four unused cables going outside to the dishes (one 18" round SD DirecTV dish, and one Hughesnet internet dish). I want them to add a new dish for the HD receiver, using two of the four cables, leaving the other two for a future HD receiver in the home theater I am planning.

They are schedule to do the install on the 13th.

Will they keep the 18" dish for the legacy receivers (I have 4) and add the new dish, or will they want me to convert everything to the new dish because of the locals moving in the future? I thought I could keep the 18" dish forever (I paid for and installed it myself, so I would think I can keep it.)

What they will expect to do is replace the round dish with a 5LNB dish. The four cables can go to that and then a multiswitch can feed your legacy and new receivers. I see no particular advantage in keeping the 18" dish. If you want them to do that, expect to have to pay substantially more for the install.
