Why is TivoCast so Limited?

I have recently purchased a HD TiVo and was excited about the TivoCast option as I could see the great potential in the convergence of traditional television and Internet video. But, for the most part, I have been appalled by the poor selection and quality of the TivoCast options.

Sure, there are a few good shows (e.g. Cranky Geeks, CNET), but given the mind-boggling number of high-quality Internet-based shows (e.g. Revision3/Diggnation), why has TiVo not been able to bring us these better options?

Any thoughts?

I'd guess that TiVo wants to vet the shows for compatibility mostly. They also don't want you being able to subscribe to just anything out there as you'd be able to get ripped movies, etc on your Series3 pretty easily.

They didn't even respond to DL.tv for months according to one the the episodes I watched, so I would venture a guess and say they are turning down content left and right.

I agree with you to a point but there are other models that are being created by companies such as Revision3 (and a bunch of other companies) that have embedded sponsorship that does not rely on banner ads etc.

Plus, consider the thousands of Video Podcasts available on iTunes. These don't always rely on banner ads or other "click-through" methods. So there seems to be plenty of available content.

So, again, why are Tivocasts so incredibly limited?

TiVo, you state that TiVocasts are "great, innovative video content that doesn't fit the traditional format or time constraints of broadcast television". Within this definition you were only able to find 33 shows out there that met this criterea? Please go back and try harder...

A year ago (when I joined the TiVoCast team) we had only three content partners. We now have, as you say, over 30. We've added more than a dozen in the last six weeks. I will say there is a bit of lead time involved (especially for the legal review of the required contract), and we have a lot more in the pipeline.

We don't have a large staff on TiVoCast, since the content is free. There's only so much we can handle. Best thing to do? Let us know about partners you'd like to see added.

I'm on the operations side personally, so it's not up to me which ones get added; but I work closely with the programming team.

Perhaps if you knew the work that was required to add a partner you'd have more of an appreciation of the free content we do have?

Give your mom a TiVo DVR and have her subscribe? :)

in epsiode 195 DL.tv was not aware that TiVoToGo was slated to come out in November for the S3.

They also were showing the "TiVo Like" USB HDTV adapter for a mac :rolleyes:

That was based on talking to content producers about a year ago. TiVo is getting more choices faster these days.

Having worked for TiVo many years ago I witnessed first-hand a small group of very passionate people drive some very visionary things. As you were one of those people, I am glad to see you leading the operations of TiVoCast!

What is the best way to submit these requests to ensure the programming folks know what people want? Though I see informal requests relating to this on this website, I see nothing about submitting requests for new content via the TiVo site.

I can only imagine the amount of effort it takes to acquire and distribute quality broadband content. However, as a TiVo subscriber, I am concerned that this TiVoCast thing runs the risk of becoming the underappreciated step-child.

Like TiVo did early on in defining the next generation of the television experience, TiVoCast can likewise define the next generation integrated convergence of broadband video into a seamless interface with other media. As a consumer, I am simply frustrated with the slow start. But I also understand that good things are worth waiting for!
