Ok, maybe i am confused but if your are on the channel that will be recorded later, shouldn't Tivo record from that channel. Example. Tuesday I was recording both Bones (ch 250) and NCIS (ch 255) at the same time. Before the recording started, I was already watching channel 255 and I believe the other tuner was on NBC 217. I had not watched anything on the other tunner. So in theory, Tivo should have changed the other tuner to 250 and kept the tunner I was watching on 255 and record from it. However for some unknown reason, it changed the channel 255 to 250 and recorded bones while it changed the other tunner to 255 and recorded NCIS. Is this a bug in tivo. I just got the 9.1 update on that same day. BTW this is on a Tivo Series 3 unit

I'm taking a stab at the dark on this one but I think Tivo prioritizes records starting with tuner1. It doesn't care what tuner2 is doing as long as tuner1 is not already recording. What I haven't experienced first hand is if let's say, you have one show scheduled to record and you are watching a live show on tuner1. Would the tivo start recording on tuner2 or record on tuner1 and switch you to tuner2 automatically. I can see how this might seem confusing, and even a bit annoying. I just prefer to let tivo do its thing.

Yes... this is part of what seems to me to be a terrible tuner assignment algorithm. TiVo is constantly and unnecessarily changing the channel on me for recordings, and even for suggestions.

See my previous thread on this issue here. Frankly, I am surprised I have not seen more posts on this as I find this to be one of the most annoying "features" of my tivo.

Yes, I find this annoying. I'll be watching something delayed on Tuner 1 on a channel that an upcoming program is set to be recorded as well as another channel to be recorded (almost the exact same situation as DrWho453 above - but I have an active buffer that I'm wanting to get through.) Then BAM it swaps tuners on to me. I switch to the other tuner and my buffer is gone - at this point I'm thing WTF did it do that for.

Since this point, I've learned that if I want to watch it, to not rely on the buffer, hit record and delete it later.

OTOH, I've had it save me in a way. One thing that annoyed me with my S2(entirely due to user error) was if I were watching the buffer and accidentally hit the channel button or a number button on the remote. It would change the channel and I would lose all the buffer on the previous channel.

I've had this happen on my THD(apparently I can't correct the user error flaw), but instead of changing the channel on the tuner I am watching the buffer on, it switches to the other tuner and changes the channel there. I can then switch back to the other tuner and it has kept the buffer exactly as I left it. That's pretty nifty.

It seems like this feature can be kept in tact while still rectifying the other problems. It seems as though everything would be fine if instead of ALWAYS giving priority to Tuner 1, it would instead give priority to the non-displayed channel. A little more logic would be required to "smartly" assign tuners if one of the displayed channels is the same channel as an impending recording, but it all seems like it would be really simple to implement.

Ok, thanks. That seems to make sense as far as what is happening. It would be nice if it could say "Hey look I need to record on 255 and he is watching 255 on tuner 2, I will just record from turner 2 instead of switching tuner 1" but I guess the programing for that would be to complex.

Funny, I was just going to post about this, and then found this thread. I was watching a program that was not "recording" when a show previously scheduled to record was about to start. I got the usual message that it was going to switch channels to record the show. I was kind of surprised, because I would have thought that it would just automatically record the show on the other tuner, rather than change the channel I was watching and killing my buffer.

How do you know whether you are on tuner 1 or tuner 2? Nothing comes up on the info screen.

Go to tivo system information screen and the click on diagnostics. It will tell you that tuner 0 is tuned to channel x and then scroll down and it will say tuner 1 is tuned to channel x. So if you are watching something on channel 255 and go to diagnostics and it shows 255 for the channel on tuner 1 then you are watching 255 on tuner 2. So tuner 0 is tuner 1 and tuner 1 is tuner 2.

Since with a single S-Card in slot one the S3 or THD operates in single tuner mode it makes sense to schedule the higher priority show to record on Tuner 1. That way if Tuner 2 is unavailable the lower priority show gets missed.
