I just moved and I am waiting for Comcast to install my HDTV service. I have a home theater that requires the optical dolby digital connection. I called TiVo to purchase the HiDef dvr but they warned me about the recorded play back quality - has anyone experienced this? How bad is it?

Also I want to take advantage of the muli-room viewing so I would need to puchase an 80 hour standard definition dvr. However I do have an old svr-2000 who's modem has been replaced with the ethernet card. I can not transfer my service so I will keep this box running.

Anyone have any opinions or any heads up for me? Thank you!

You will not be able to get HD content unless you get the S3 or TiVo HD with CableCARDs. When using those devices the quality of digital channels is identical to the source because the TiVo just records the raw bitstream as transmitted by your provider.

As to MRV, that is not (currently) possible with the S3 or TiVo HD.

I am looking to buy the hd tive they have advetised for $299 I am cool with that.

The TiVo rep told me that the playback of recorded hi-def was not as good as live - weird huh, I am with you and your logic but why would she try to scare me away?

I am going the route with the cable cards, I had no idea that they were even being used.

MRV is coming out in the future, from what I understand the S3 and the TiVo HD will be able to get this upgrade - no?

The Tivo rep told you that? It's completely wrong - the unit makes a direct copy of the digital channels, so there is no degradation whatsoever.

You're spot on about the MRV - it's expected on both units sometime this year.

LOL!

The only possible way the rep can be right:

1) You watch a HD signal using an OTA signal live
2) You also record the cable rebroadcast version of that station AND your cable company compresses it.

How do we forward this message to TiVoPony or other TiVo folks? They should be alerted to a Service Rep who is providing either false or misleading information........

The more I think about it, I am guessing the rep was trying to talk about possible compression of signals by the cable company or was talking about a non-HD model where you have the quality settings.

But regardless.......sheeeeesh!
