I have a vintage 2010 unit and can't believe it still works. It has been making some weird grindy sounds so I suspect the rear fan is going.

The rubber feet on the left side of the unit crumbled to dust a long time ago so I cut a couple of slices off a wine cork to support that side, but the resulting height on that side is maybe 1/8 inch greater than the other. Would that affect the hard drive and could that be causing the sound? As far as I can tell the unit is working fine though.

If it is just the fan, it's fairly easy to replace, right?

I just copy and searched your post heading and came up with this fan from Amazon.
