I posted here about 1 month ago asking if my old Series 3 TiVo could be converted to a NAS device. The answer was "no", which was fine. But since I can't use it for that, I have no use for it and was wondering what, if *anything* could be done with it? I'm not going to be in a situation where I can use it again. I have a BOLT that's working fine and that's all I need.

So my questions are:

1. What if anything can it be used for, and
2. If I end up having to put it into my local electronics recycling place, how do I erase everything on it, similar to what I'd do with a PC that I was recycling?

Thanks in advance.

If it already has a lifetime subscription, then it can be used to record. You can also sell it for about $100.
Without a subscription, then it is only good for parts.

1: yes good for parts. if you are near (<10 miles) of zip 90505 I'll take it for parts.
2: recycle it after removing the hdd. or drill a couple of holes in the hdd.

I'm 2806 miles from 90505. :) So I suspect that's too far.

What could be on the HD of any value to anybody????
I can't imagine anything of value being there, except...see my next answer. :)

Good point.
Some people are just paranoid and want all digital data "shredded."
Program content I don't care about, but if there was any personal information on there, I wouldn't want that to be just put out into recycling. I'll remove the HDD and either reformat it and put in an external case, or disassemble it.
