Hello All,

I just joined the forum today and this will be my first post. The reason I joined the forum is to get answers to the following questions. If this is not the proper forum for these question, please give me a link to the correct place.

A friend of mine just got a TiVo 40 hour for Christmas along with a wireless USB adapter. I had no idea about the ability to use wireless with these devices, so when I did research, I was disappointed to find that I CANNOT use the same USB device. The more research I did on TiVO(dot)com, the more I found that other users could do, that I cannot.

TiVoToGo
Online Scheduling
MultiRoom Viewwing
etc...

My experience with TiVo up until this point has only been with the Series 2 R10 DirecTV DVR. Why does it not work with all of these features? Now it seems that using a TiVO box from TiVo would give me more of an advantage. Actually, more like it would allow me to do what TiVo is growing into.

So, I am wondering, what should I do? Should I give my box away and simply use the Sat box for signal and the TiVo box for Tivo? If I did that, would I be able to keep the same "Tivo" account or do I have get a new one?

Thanks in advance.

it doesn't work with those features because directv doesn't want it to.
BUT there's hope.
Sell your R10 on Ebay and buy a DVR80 from robert at valueelectronics.com and hack your dtivo for the features you're missing.

Good Recommendation! I did notice that Robert at Value Electronics still has SD-DVR80's on hand. In fact, I was considering buying one myself as a backup, since it could be a while until TiVo, the CableCard people, and the cable industry get their act together.

I wonder as an existing DirecTV customer, can I buy the SD-DVR80 for $99 and can I buy more than one. I guess I should ask Robert what the details are.

I am preparing for the long haul, I do not plan on going to HD until January of 2009 (three more years), but I currently will not buy a "R15" and the Series 3 TiVo is really currently VAPORWARE with all of the multi-directional cable industry problems.

E-mail that I just sent to Robert at Value Electronics:

Robert or Sales,

I am a current DirecTV customer, what are the details and requirements to purchase up to three DVR80’s.

Can I buy three of them for $99 each?
Do I have to activate all three of them?
If I have to activate all of them, can I pull all of them from my account after a couple of days and put them away for future use?
Will I get hit with a two year commitment?
And will my DVR charge change from $4.99 to $5.99?

This is important, because I am attempting to have available for the next three years backups for my current HDVR2 SD DirecTiVos, until I go HD in January of 2009.

Thanks so very much.

Don't overlook the advantages that your DirecTV/Tivo DVR has vs. a standalone Tivo ...

* dual tuners so you can record two different channels while watching a third previously recorded program

* better recording quality since it records DirecTV's digital data directly to the hard drive

* Dolby Digital audio for better surround sound

* cheaper subscription fees

BTW, the TiVo accounts are separate. The standalone is $12.95/month paid to TiVo.
The DVR account with DirecTV is $5.99/month. And the R10 gives you dual tuners. But, you could do as Gunnyman suggested.

I never hacked my DTivo's beyond installing larger hard drives in both. Those 'additional' features seem pretty useless for my viewing habits. If I want to view a certain program on either DTivo, I just make sure both units record it. And I have no desire to watch programs on a laptop.
