It looks like there are a number of vendors selling a TCD653080 Tivo box - what is it?

As far as I can tell, it's actually the Tivo HD (TCD652160).

Why would Tivo have two totally different model numbers for the same box?

Has anyone actually bought a TCD653080? If so, does the TSN on the box/back panel actually start with 653?

That is rumored to be the replacement for the Tivo Series2, basically the TivoHD hardware with composite and s-video inputs. Given the limited storage capacity, it may or may not record HD signals from OTA and cable in high-definition.

[Recall that the TivoHD has hardware which can transcode MPEG-2 HD to MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 SD on the fly.]

I think this model # is an error as TiVo has no units that they are selling with that model number.

Do a search - that model number popped up along with the leaks of the TiVo HD. There is no such model - but the number seems to indicate it is related to the TiVo HD and has an 80GB drive. Speculation is that it is a proposed or future model that uses the analog A/V inputs not used on the HD, something that replaces the S2DT.

I know the history; I'm just surprised that there are so many vendors selling a TCD653080 and a few on eBay.

"Product Name: TiVo® HD" -- the same one that everyone is selling for ~$300.

People wanting to make $ with the TiVo HD make a link work looking for TCD653080. They seen that people look for that number a lot so any thing that gets a big hit in search they do this stuff. Like get a web page name too.

Not sure if Tivo would ever design a new model with a 80GB HDD. 160GB HDD are so cheap now, it would save Tivo maybe $10 in hardware cost to go down to 80GB. They are probably better off just stick with 160GB across the board.

Yes, that information [posted 8/19] doesn't appear to correct. We can't know for certain because VIXS still has not published specifications on that part.
I'm sorry, my new post links had expired and I didn't notice I was in an old thread that had gotten resurrected.

Also TiVoPony had made a comment some weeks ago that this was consumer hardware and not to expect any transcoding. That with the idea the TiVo HD was designed with cost consciousness leads me to think transcoding is not there. I would not be surprised if the circuitry were on the chip, but that it was disabled.
