My TIVO HD unit and Comcast cable cards set up without a problem. Since I've had the TIVO, I've been using cable card 1. Today, for no reason, I decided to switch to card 2. I hit Live TV button, the banner for the channel the card was tuned to came up, but the screen was grey. When I hit Select, the channel came on and all my channels appear to be there. I switched back to card 1 and the same thing happened, grey screen with a banner and after Select, the channel comes up. I just got concerned about the grey screen because from several threads I've read here that seems to be something that happens when things aren't working right.

Pressing LiveTV does not switch cards. It switches tuners. Any tuner my be associated to any card, and also a tuner might not be associated to a card at all.

You need to read the info in that Diagnostics screen (under either the Account Info or CableCARD menu) to see which tuner is/is not associated with what card. If you hit LiveTV from that Diagnostic screen, you can later left arrow out of LifeTV right back to the screen making it easier to experitment with tuner/channel combos to see what's happening.

* Note: for S3s, this info is only available with 9.1. Also, its not clear there isn't a bug in the S3's screen because card2 status is above card1 status.

The following sequence is handy for determining which CC is being used on the currently viewed tuner and output resolution:
Select Play Select Replay Select

The info is displayed at the bottom of the screen and it is a toggle.

Thanks. Is there a link for the latest SPS sequences that you know of?

I don't know if the OP's issue is the same as the "black screen with black background on menus" issue, but I have 9.1 and am getting the black screen again this AM after having the TiVo HD working fine late last night and nothing done to it overnight.

Thanks for all this info. I called Comcast back and they resent whatever signals they send to the cable card and now switching tuners or cable cards or whatever it is I am switching when I press Live TV results in the channel banner AND the picture rather than the channel banner and a gray screen. There was some problem with Comcast's system last week (or so the technician said) when I did the set-up and so we may never have completed it properly.

HDTiVo, can you clear up the post above for me? TIVO has two tuners and it has two cable cards, but that the tuner 1 isn't necessarily assigned to card 1 and tuner 2 to card 2? The TIVO viewers guide say you need two cable cards if you want to watch and record two shows at once. Isn't that the same thing as having two tuners? I am new to TIVO and just want to learn. Any resources you can point me to would be helpful.

That's good to hear - I was able to get one tuner back without rebooting, and I now have the following situation: one tuner is fine, the other shows black screen but shows the channel banner, and this time, the TiVo background MPEG IS active.

I'm going to reboot again and see what happens. I just checked again and it's very strange - as I change tuners, sometimes one is working and the other not, and vice versa.

I'll repeat GS also since some channels may be missing.
