What happens after commitment period?

Ok, I've been searching around on this, but haven't found a definitive answer (even TiVoPony's left some room for interpretation). I currently have 3 TiVos in play.

S2 - $12.95
HD - $12.95
S2 - $6.95

Now I picked up an XL off of Amazon without catching that it's the 1 Year $19.95 requirement (haven't opened the box yet luckily). After reading around, I'm flipping back and forth on returning it. However, if I could get MSD on the plan after the year, I might just keep it. (Cost a bit more, but I can work with it)

The question is, has anyone definitively confirmed what happens AFTER the 1 Year Commitment? I've seen speculation that it could be dropped to monthly pricing, and other that it would stay at $19.95 and only be available to change to Lifetime. If the latter is true, this thing goes back to Amazon and I regroup for the next move.

The truth is NO ONE can answer that question for two reasons:
1. It has been less than 1 year since the start of this promotion.
2. Every service agreement I have read for this promotion simply has been vauge and equivocal about what the month-to-month fee will be. However, this is directly from the TiVo agreement: "1-year commitment to the TiVo service required after which your service plan will continue at $19.99 per month on a month- to-month basis"

Now, it said it will continue at $19.99, but it does not explicitly prohibit the option for the $12.95 per month plan, but it certainly does not state any other plan than the $19.99 per month.

Bottom line is that it looks to me like TiVo will do what it pleases down the line when the 1 year commitment ends. TiVo has left its options open to allow a lower cost monthly plan or to simply continue to impose the $19.99 for that box forever. NO ONE KNOWS, and we won't until the fat lady sings. Sorry, but that is the truth. Anyone other than an official TiVo press release or change in the text of the agreement would be utter SPECULATION, with die-hard TiVo fans saying optimistically that "if you call TiVo and ask, they will probably let you continue at $12.95 after the 1 year," or "you will probably have to call in to get the lower monthly price," but they don't really know that. Meanwhile, the more skeptical are saying to count on $19.95 forever. TiVo is being deliberately vague. We'll have to wait and see.

I actually did a live chat with TiVo about this.

At the end of the comittment if you call in, you can get the then current pricing for new customers. You HAVE to contact TiVo to get it taken care of though.

The rep of course couldn't say what that price will be (next December for me), but I will take it.

I would think the question of the rate after the first year would be one of the top questions asked of customer support, and yet Tivo does not clarify the issue.

To start out with the $12.95 rate you have to pay $299.99 for the premiere. So after the first year you would have paid Tivo $455.39.

With the $99.99/$19.99 plan you've paid Tivo $339.87 after the first year.

Tivo loses $115.52 per unit if they let the customer switch from $19.99 to $12.95 after the first year. I would think Tivo would have to mention this in their financial reports if they planned on offering the $12.95 rate after the first year.

I wouldn't count on any other rate being available except the $19.99 per month rate.
Maybe TiVo plans on raising the normal rate to $19.95 by the time these Premieres reach their 1 year commitment.

Very possible, but Here's hoping!

FYP. Allowing the customer to switch from $19.99 to $12.95 would only increase the amount of time it takes TiVo to make up the $115.52 difference.

I think we'll see a lot more Premieres on Ebay & Craigslist starting in November.

And if TiVo doesn't recognize this as a likely consequence, they would be fools not to offer a price point that would be more acceptable to consumers. As it is, I think they are/were just testing that level of acceptability with this promotion.
I chatted on-line with customer service twice about this. They said if you stayed month to month it would be the 19.99/month with no option to lower it. They did confirm that you could buy the (PLS) after the 1 year commitment. That is my plan after my year. I asked two different CS reps the same question and printed my chat transcripts just to be safe since that is why I bought it. I would not have gotten one if I had to stay in a $19.99 monthly commitment.

I kind of got the feeling that the 19.99 follows the box even if you sell it. I could be wrong but in chatting with TIVO reps that is what it seemed like.

My question is: Would people who have multiple Tivos be able to get MSD pricing?

My gut tells me no for some reason.

At the end of the current commitment that you are on you are guaranteed the $19.99 per month once the commitment is over. If the $12.95 per month plan is available you would be able to change to that plan at that time, but it will not happen automatically.
Apparently the folks at TiVo don't even know. This is a direct quote from a chat transcript.

And I was told just the opposite lol I think it's just gonna be a wait and see.
