If your video connection to the TV is HDMI, the TiVo gets signals back from the TV and turning the TV on/off could make a difference. I normally use the component outputs (3 video cables and 2 audio cables) from my TiVo because when I use the HDMI connection I get TiVo lockups occasionally. The other day, for test purposes, I reverted back to the HDMI connection. Then when I wanted to go back to the component connection I had to power cycle the TV before the component connection would be recognized as an input to the TV.
Welcome Powering Up oddity...
Can't figure this one out...
Setup: TiVO HD video connected directly to TV. Audio connected directly to audio receiver.
I was listening to a Music Choice channel on audio - the TV was not on. I changed the TiVO channel a couple of times to different Music Choice channels. No problem. Later, I decided to turn on the TV. As soon as I did that, the music stopped, and the WPU screen appeared instantly on the TV. Since I didn't notice the TiVO unit shutting down and THEN powering up, it may have been there for awhile. I waited several minutes beyond the usual start-up time, and nothing was happening. So I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and it started up fine.
I guess my question is...how could I be getting audio from the TiVO if it was in a "powering up" stage?? Could just turning on the TV cause the TiVO to reboot (even if I didn't notice, it is possible that's what happened)? Or was it just a coincidence> Last time it did the random re-boot was six months ago.

Thanks, Cranky, but I am aware of the HDMI "problem," I use component and audio cables. That's why I thought it odd that just turning on the TV would get the TiVO to reboot. Check your AC you probably have a bad connection in a socket or power strip.

The momentary drain from turning on your TV apparently deprived the TiVo of enough power to keep operating.
You should have your TiVo on a UPS.

A connection bad enough to glitch your TiVo from turning on a TV is very bad -- find it and fix it!
Here is a good inexpensive UPS that will handle a TiVo and a Tuning Adapter and provide surge protection for some other gear also:

But having a UPS doesn't mean it's OK to let a bad connection go unfixed.
