Want to keep HMO, but don't need regular TiVo service anymore - possible?

Hi everyone,

OK, so I've had my TiVo series 2 DVR for 4 years or so, and I love it. But we just got HD with Comcast HD DVR. I really don't need the TiVo for recording shows anymore, but I've grown addicted to being able to play all my mp3s through the TiVo via the Music and Photos option.

So my question is: is there any way to still use the TiVo for Music and Photos if I cancel my monthly subscription for the normal service or will the Music and Photos functionality stop working if I cancel?

I feel bad about asking... I've been a happy TiVo customer for years, but if I can save the $12/month, I kinda need to.

If there's a FAQ for this, please point me to it. I was unable to find it.

Thanks,

-jg

Nope, those features are part of the paid service. There are network media appliances that do much of the same thing though, without a service fee, and mostly have no HDD or fan.

Like what? I want the hmo features, but don't need the tivo anymore.
ya. I'd love to know what's available along these lines. It could be that nothing's as good as the TiVo on-screen interface, and I'll just keep paying the monthly fee *just* for HMO, but that seems a bit silly. I wish I had paid for lifetime subscription :|

I love my Apple TV. It does exactly what hmo does AND it plays all of the protected iTunes music.

And videos in itunes too.
Get an Xbox 360!
i have the dlink dsm 320

it is great for music but not so for video files. The concept of streaming music is great...but fails with 802.11g and movies

Out of the box the Dlink's server software is adequate but there are different UPnP servers out there that are better. (M$ makes one, and a few others.) Personally i used one called TVersity.

Any way as soon as i got my tivo i ditched the DSM...and once Tivo2GO (and back) is enabled for the Tivo HD/S3 I'll be in hog heaven.

What do you suppose would happen if your Tivo was unable to connect to the internet for guide data and updates, let's say for example if your firewall was configured to disallow access from the Tivo to the Internet....

A better question is why get rid of your Tivo? I just purchased two new HD tivos after being a S1 and S2 owner for many years and couldn't be happier. Ditch the comcast DVR and buy a Tivo HD instead. The THD is currently lacking some of the MRV features, but they are supposed to be added soon. You'll get the same great Tivo features, same great Tivo service, etc.
Hmmmm.... now that's an interesting idea. I thought the HD TiVos were more expensive, but my friend just sent me this link:

https://www3.tivo.com/store/boxdetails.do?boxName=180hourtivohd&boxsku=R65216

Can someone give me the skinny on this? Here are my questions:

This thing really REPLACES my comcast cable box? I can use this thing in conjunction with comcast digital cable and it does everything I need?

I'm guessing I'd still have to pay for digital cable w/ HD broadcast from comcast, but I wouldn't have to pay the $10 for DVR since I'd be getting that functionality through the TiVo?

Does this box also do the same HMO features?

If this will work, I'd do it in a second. Can someone confirm? Also, what do I do with my current series 2 tivo?

Thanks, gang!

Yes, that is a TiVoHD, which replaces your cable box. Yuo won't pay the cable compamy a DVR fee, but still have to subscribe to the TiVo service.

The TiVoHD has all the same HMO features the Series 2 line has, except for now, there are no in-home video transfers.

The Series 2 is yours to decide how to liquidate.
The only thing the TiVoHD won't do for you that your cable box might currently is to support Pay Per View and Video on Demand. Otherwise, they're pretty much the same, and you get two tuners to boot. My full review of the TiVoHD here:
