Video stream freezes and unfreezes every four (4) seconds - ONE CHANNEL ONLY!

I have a TiVo Series3 HD DVR that was purchased through CircuitCity shortly before they went under.

This issue has appeared once or twice before. It has now irritated me enough to post about it. I have done countless searches, but no matter what, it seems that no one is having EXACTLY my problem.

I will be watching a television station (live) - today it was AMC, standard definition - and the live video will freeze and unfreeze at exactly four (4) second intervals. While it is 'frozen', the video stream must continue, because it picks up four seconds later in the stream (i.e. - while it is 'frozen', it is skipping four seconds of program, then plays four seconds of program at the correct place (as if it had been playing the stream continuously), then freezes again, etc.) Rebooting the TiVo does not help this issue. The flawed channel still freezes and unfreezes every four (4) seconds, while the surrounding channels continue to play fine.

This ONLY HAPPENS ON THIS ONE CHANNEL! All of the surrounding stations I have checked played their video streams without interruption.

Rewinding the stream and playing it back results in a little artifacting, but otherwise seems to play somewhat normally.

I am unaware of this issue affecting any recorded shows, but I do not know if any shows recorded while this issue was taking place (and on the specific channel).

I know this is a TiVo issue and not a Comcast issue because I have a Comcast digital receiver (Scientific Atlanta Explorer 2200) in another room, which plays the same channel flawlessly.

I live in Cape Coral, FL. ZIP Code 33904. Local provider is Comcast. I am in the Digital Rebuild (category?). My receiver is a TiVo Series3 HD DVR. It is currently running software version 11.0k-01-2-652. I am using an M-Card to access some of the digital channels. I do not believe we currently subscribe to any HD channels.

I don't know what other information you might need to help. I am not sure what information should be kept 'private' (i.e. - so that no one else has access to my account), so I did not post it here yet.

Thank you for your time.

1. Reboot the tivo.
2. Swap the HDMI cable with a known working system.
3. Swap the coax cable with a known working system.
I have rebooted the TiVo. This has not helped the issue.

I fail to see how changing the coax or the A/V connections from the TiVo to the television will solve anything. However, I will try this when I get a chance, if the problem still exists. It does come and go.

Thank you for your time.
Did you check the signal strength on the bad channel VS a good channel?
I do not believe we currently subscribe to any HD channels.
FYI,

Not that it has anything to do with your current problem, but
Comcast usually provides unencrypted access to HD versions of your local
OTA channels, even with BASIC. Are you saying you aren't receiving ANY HD channels?
Signal strength is at 100 for both the good and bad channels.

I will have to check about the local HD channels... you're talking about the local NBC, ABC, CBS, correct? I guess it could be possible...

Thank you for your time.
You may want to insert an attenuator in-line with the TiVo that is having this problem. While you show 100% signal, that's the max level it will show. The signal can actually be higher than that and be swamping the tuner. I had this problem with our Series 3 TiVo and had to put an attenuator in-line. A cheap attenuator is a splitter, though adjustable attenuators are available. I got mine at Radio Shack, though I am unsure if they still carry them.

Also, if you have an amplifier in-line with your cable feed and can remove it, that would be a good test.
We do have an amplifier on the main feed before it splits off to the different televisions... I can try to disconnect/bypass that and see if that helps...

However, could that only affect one channel? and have the surrounding channels normal?
Check your RS uncorrected values in the DVR diagnostics menu.
If you see the number going up you have a poor signal. This can
be caused by bad connectors, splitters, too strong a signal or many other problems.

You can start with the cable closest to the Tivo and work back....

This can also be caused by Comcast not leveling the signal strength properly.
The SA box may work but it as a different tuner and different specs....

Is this only happening on AMC?

Maybe it's an AMC problem happening before the signal even gets to Comcast.

When you playback, are the missing 4 seconds there, even if a bit screwed up? In other words, are you recording something that didn't make it into the signal TiVo sent out as "live" (which is actually about a half second behind, because it shows the analog conversion of the digital conversion of the original analog input)?

This tells me that it's not AMC, correct?
