Since Directv is moving away from Tivo-based units, it will never happen. Hacking is the only way to go (Series 2 units). If you have a R10, be prepared to get out your soldering gun as well.

I have to wonder if after the D*/TiVo relationship officially ends in a year (Feb 2007), if somehow a version of the software enabling MRV and some other HMO features gets released "into the wild."

So an upgrade would be as easy as adding a drive is today.

I can't imagine how that would happen. The only way for DTiVos to load the software normally is if they're sent over the satellite and a phone call triggers the install. Hobbyist/hackers already know how to turn on networking and most HMO/MRV features on DTiVos (HDTV models are networking-only), so there's no big deal there. The hacked DTiVos can't participate in services that require TiVo central server support, such as TCO and the new HME features such as games.
