I haven't worried about an upgrade in three years or so, when the 137(?)k limit was still in effect. In the aftermath, DirecTV replaced the unit over confusion about the warranty. That unit is now in the bedroom, but I now seem to need more capacity with the Phillips 708 that I got after the after the move two years ago.

I *think* that my capacity is 40 hours; it sure doesn't seem to be anywhere near 80.

Apparently, the storage limit is long gone. Will the software now on this unit handle it, or do I need to find something new?

I'm assuming a 500gb derive, as they're the sweet spot. Is there any reason to add it as a second drive instead of replacing the current drive?

Are there any brands to avoid? (I'd rather avoid noise!)

Re there still "DVR Drives," and is there any reason to use them?

Is there a general summary about the general current state of things?

For fixing your current drive may I suggest MFSlive.org. They have utilities that can expand Tivo drives if they were set wrong. I am personally running the Maxtor 500 GB drive purchased from Newegg for 99.99 with free shipping. It is quiet and I use it in my bedroom. I used Instantcake and PTVnet to enable the TiVo image and disable the requirement that the phone be plugged in. I also changed the 2032 battery as their life is about the same as the disk. A 708 would have an 80 GB drive, which translates into about 70 Hrs recording time.

The current software, 6.x, will have the LBA48 support needed for large drives.

You should replace the drive with the large one. You won't really notice the 70 Hrs missing, and your DVR will be less prone to failure with one drive.

"DVR Drives" are sprecially built for DVR service. IMO, you could likely get by with a standard PC drive with Acoustic Management set.

It's not broken, or even acting up--just not big enough any more. I'm assuming that I I toss the old & new drives in another machine and use mfstools or some such to first copy the drive and then expand it into the extra 420gb.

Most drives have AAM. I think Some Seagates don't (or at least don't use the standard AAM commands), or something like that.
