updated way to upgrade a series 1?

Back like in 2000 or 2001 i upgraded my series 1 phillips tivo to over 100 hours using i think dylan disk(?) and linux(?) on a floppy to install the second hard drive in it. I believe the main HD has died, but not sure.

The tivo central main interface comes up but it won't change to now playing or anything and i have tried 3 different remotes. I had a spare series 1 sitting around i put in service its place but it only had 15 hours on it.

I would like to take the second HD out of the old tivo and put it in the new one to see if my recordings are still there.

My question, is there an updated way to setup the new tivo to accept the second HD? if so can you please point me to those instructions, files, ect?

THANK YOU!

If either hard drive died then you can pretty much kiss your recordings goodbye. There may be a way to extract the recordings from the 2nd drive, but you need to be a Linux expert running a standalone Linux PC to get to them.

A lot has happened since the introduction of Dylan's Boot Disk over a decade ago. MFS Tools was the norm for updating series 1 and 2 Tivos. Later, WinMFS was used for Series 3 Tivos and now there's a new method for the Premiere. I'm not entirely sure but I think WinMFS can be used for older Tivos as well, but you should probably check out mfslive.org for more info.
In the distant past I have extracted programs from dying hard drives with dd_rescue from a linux disc. A dead drive, no way.

If I were you, I would try WinMFS. Connect both old Tivo drives and a new one at least as large as the combined old ones and see what happens.

Actually, as long as the new one is at least 160 GB I think it would work. As I recall, Series 1 had a limit of 137 GB. Unless I'm forgetting some workaround.

There are at least 3 different things in this post which I need to put first.:)

Since I can't do that, read everything. Twice.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Start by listing the model numbers of every TiVo in your house, so that there's no confusion.

For now, I'm going to assume that you have two Series 1 non-DirecTV TiVos, either both Philips brand, or both Sony SVR-2000 models.

If you have more than one TiVo, does that mean you know about setting remotes and TiVos to different addresses so that more than one TiVo can be used in the same room at the same time?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recordings made on any given TiVo are tied to that TiVo's service number, which is on the crypto chip on the motherboard.

A different TiVo, even the same model, won't read recordings from the first.

Unless you unsolder the crypto chip and transplant it to the second TiVo, which is not a job for those inexperienced in working with surface mount devices. I learned this the hard way.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

If it boots and goes to TiVo Central, then your main hard drive is working, but if it will not respond to any remote commands something is probably wrong with the infrared receiver and/or associated circuitry.

DO NOT BOOT OR APPLY POWER TO A TIVO WITH THE FRONT PANEL DISCONNECTED FROM THE MOTHERBOARD, OR EVEN IF THE CONNECTOR HAS BEEN ACCIDENTLY BUMPED AND SLIGHTLY DISLODGED.

Look and see if you think you can disconnect and remove the front panels on both machines without damaging anything.

If not, we'll work on a temporary motherboard swap instead.

Either way, if TiVo B works, then its front panel works, so we'll use that front panel attached to TiVo A's motherboard to see if that fixes the problem, in which case we can blame the electronics on TiVo A's front panel OR THE RIBBON CABLE CONNECTING IT TO TIVO A.

So start with each front panel retaining its own ribbon cable.

If TiVo A works with Tivo B's front panel and cable, swap cables and see if it still works. If it does, both cables are good and TiVo A's front panel electronics themselves are at fault.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Do you still have a PC to which you can attach non-SATA (IDE/PATA) hard drives?

Since you're going to have the TiVos opened up anyway, might as do some backups.

Go to mfslive.org and download the zip of the iso of the MFS Live cd v1.4 and burn yourself a copy, and if you've got a PC running XP or later, download WinMFS as well.

Read everything on the mfslive.org site, but don't act yet.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Report back.

Don't be in a hurry to fix this. Be in a hurry to slow down and do it correctly the first time.

WINMFS will work for imaging Series 1 Philips drives and probably other S1 units as well. I use a USB to Universal drive cable so that I don't have to open any computer boxes. You can check out another thread in this forum for inexpensive adapters that will let you connect a SATA drive to your S1 IDE cables.
unitron and others, you have given me some good advice and i will digest it and take it slow and figure out the best course of action.

i do get tivo central but nothing works via the remote. i may have a 3rd
series1 laying around that i can try to switch things out in.

keep the advice coming..thanks again.

btw is there a cable harness i can hook into the main Hd and hook it to a external hd for extra storage?

If you get to TiVo central, then the primary drive, the master, the one from which the TiVo boots, is working.

So your problem is that signals from the remote aren't getting to the motherboard, or the remotes are set to an address other than 0 (or, on the Sony S1, 1), and the TiVo is set to a different number from the one to which the remote is set.

The way to get extra storage for an S1 that already has 2 drives is to replace them with 2 bigger drives (with a Marvell chipset based SATA to IDE adapter--only chipset that works for S1s--you can use 2 1TB SATA drives--see the adapter thread), and/or I understand that the software can be hacked to allow you to "export" shows recorded after the software is hacked to a computer over an ethernet connection if you have an ethernet adapter specifically designed for the edge connector on the S1 motherboard, and maybe over the serial port as well, but that would be s--l--o--w.

As for connecting a 3rd drive to the IDE cable, not happening.

And, as I mentioned before, shows recorded on a particular TiVo are tied to that TiVo's service number if they're kept as .tivo files.

I don't think that the recordings on a Philips or Sony Series 1 are encrypted. Isn't that why talk about the tools to extract them was banned here?

I guess I could swap drives between my two retired SVR-2000s and find out for sure, but someone around here should know.

They're "encrypted" in that they're tied to the TiVo Service Number of the TiVo on which they were recorded.

If you swap drives between 2 of the same model, you'll get an error 51 on both of them, and when that gets straightened out all of the recordings on either will be gone.
Not on Series 1 Standalones. You can move a drive form one to the other and do nothing. I've done it myself.

Only on DirecTV and Series 2/3/4 TiVos are the recordings normally encrypted to the TSN, giving an error 51, requiring a C&DE, or run a fix51 script (if hacked).

I've only got a Philips and a Sony S1, so I can't do a Philips to Philips or Sony to Sony transplant, but I'll have to experiment with dd'ing MFS partitions to see what I can get away with.
