Back like in 2000 or 2001 i upgraded my series 1 phillips tivo to over 100 hours using i think dylan disk(?) and linux(?) on a floppy to install the second hard drive in it. I believe the main HD has died, but not sure.
The tivo central main interface comes up but it won't change to now playing or anything and i have tried 3 different remotes. I had a spare series 1 sitting around i put in service its place but it only had 15 hours on it.
I would like to take the second HD out of the old tivo and put it in the new one to see if my recordings are still there.
My question, is there an updated way to setup the new tivo to accept the second HD? if so can you please point me to those instructions, files, ect?
THANK YOU!
There are at least 3 different things in this post which I need to put first.
Since I can't do that, read everything. Twice.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Start by listing the model numbers of every TiVo in your house, so that there's no confusion.
For now, I'm going to assume that you have two Series 1 non-DirecTV TiVos, either both Philips brand, or both Sony SVR-2000 models.
If you have more than one TiVo, does that mean you know about setting remotes and TiVos to different addresses so that more than one TiVo can be used in the same room at the same time?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recordings made on any given TiVo are tied to that TiVo's service number, which is on the crypto chip on the motherboard.
A different TiVo, even the same model, won't read recordings from the first.
Unless you unsolder the crypto chip and transplant it to the second TiVo, which is not a job for those inexperienced in working with surface mount devices. I learned this the hard way.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
If it boots and goes to TiVo Central, then your main hard drive is working, but if it will not respond to any remote commands something is probably wrong with the infrared receiver and/or associated circuitry.
DO NOT BOOT OR APPLY POWER TO A TIVO WITH THE FRONT PANEL DISCONNECTED FROM THE MOTHERBOARD, OR EVEN IF THE CONNECTOR HAS BEEN ACCIDENTLY BUMPED AND SLIGHTLY DISLODGED.
Look and see if you think you can disconnect and remove the front panels on both machines without damaging anything.
If not, we'll work on a temporary motherboard swap instead.
Either way, if TiVo B works, then its front panel works, so we'll use that front panel attached to TiVo A's motherboard to see if that fixes the problem, in which case we can blame the electronics on TiVo A's front panel OR THE RIBBON CABLE CONNECTING IT TO TIVO A.
So start with each front panel retaining its own ribbon cable.
If TiVo A works with Tivo B's front panel and cable, swap cables and see if it still works. If it does, both cables are good and TiVo A's front panel electronics themselves are at fault.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you still have a PC to which you can attach non-SATA (IDE/PATA) hard drives?
Since you're going to have the TiVos opened up anyway, might as do some backups.
Go to mfslive.org and download the zip of the iso of the MFS Live cd v1.4 and burn yourself a copy, and if you've got a PC running XP or later, download WinMFS as well.
Read everything on the mfslive.org site, but don't act yet.

Report back.
Don't be in a hurry to fix this. Be in a hurry to slow down and do it correctly the first time.
