Unexpected change in price of monthly service

1447 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  schatham
I've been on an old $6.95 / month plan since 2004 transferred across several boxes over the years, now on my Roamio. I was just alerted by my credit card statement the change posted for October was $12.95.

Have I missed a memo on a price increase? Customer Service doesn’t open for another hour, but wanted to hear if others have seen any strange billing?

Thanks

I called when mine did that. Turns out my lifetime tivo hadn't connected in a while so they assumed I should pay full price or something. They manually set it to $6.95 so it won't ever change again and I connect my old tivo once in a while in case there's a good deal when my new one starts to go bad.

Jesus man! You paid TiVo $1,251 in service fees?

I've paid more just on lifetime subs alone.
And the number of people who paid more than that equipment rental fees over the last 15 years is staggering.

$1,251 over 16 years is less than $100/yr and his TiVO hardware is covered by continual care coverage. You'd buy at least two if not 3 lifetimes by then.

Six of one, half dozen of another.

When you'd say we'd buy two to three lifetimes by then, do you mean our hardware would fail or we'd upgrade to nicer equipment?

All in how you want to work the math. As I mentioned, the transferable $6.95 subscription was used across many devices over the years. At that low cost it was hard to justify the conversation to a lifetime plan before a newer model hit the street or the box failed and needed to be replaced. With the newer, higher priced plans, the switch to All in would be easier to justify.

After the call to customer service, the rate was restored and a credit issued.

I have gone through numerous TiVo units over the years - every time I am ready to upgrade, I sell the older unit to someone else, recouping my original lifetime service fee. Plus - I have never had a unit go bad on me...

So, no... I do not think there is a value of paying money and not getting any equity.

Nicer TiVO hardware. Most electronics has a shelf life even if the hardware lasts forever. It's not like any of my iPhones or iPods Nanos stopped working they just stopped getting the latest OS updates and newer, faster, better hardware came along. With TiVo my Premiere didn't stopped working it just was slow, hit a 2TB limit, and slowly stopped being supported and the TiVO Roamio was just magic in comparison. The Premiere went to moms basement TV and I later used its lifetime to migrate to a Bolt 3TB 4K + lifetime with the TiVO's offer. I bought the 3 year extended warranty just for added insurance.

Honestly I'm not sure what has to break on a TiVO DVR for Tivo support not to migrate your lifetime to a renewed DVR for $50-$199. The HDMI port on the motherboard went dead. TiVO charged me $50 for a renewed DVR and migrated my lifetime. My current Bolt 3TB Cable Card slot broke and TiVO offered a renewed one and to migrate my lifetime. Hard drives blow up and TiVO will migrate you. Just a matter of talking nicely and willingness to pay a few $$$.

I think TiVO support is awesome for what they are there for and they've always fixed my problem.

Valid point. I forgot about resale value of Lifetime on eBay.

I've paid more than that since 2005. I've also paid more for coffee since 2005. Life is not free.
