I have finally watched my first video from unbox (after 3 downloads and nearly 2 months I finally found a period of time I was confident I could watch the movie within the stingy 24 hour envelope)

I was very displeased with the quality of encoding. The movie I saw was "casino royale" and whenever there was any sort of fast action, the video was jittery and blurry, and many of the cuts would appear as 2 frame dissolves. I am so glad it was free, I do not think I could stomach watching another movie with such poor encoding.

dvd rental still wins: superior encoding; more than 24 hours to watch a movie (with 3 kids and some semblance of a life, this is critical)

sigh - there are many threads on this susbject already. always best to find one and add in there vs the "yet another thread" syndrome that creates too much noise on the forum.

really? I just did a forum search on "unbox encoding", "unbox quality", and "unbox nearly unwatchable" and did not see any threads that looked like my thread. Now there may very well be threads on this subject but it was not apparent from my searchs.

Sorry to have taken up your time

most of the threads are in the developers forum area for the unbox standalone HME version which discussed about the download quality. Now there Might not be any new threads pertaining to tivos new unbox feature but they both work the same way and quality has been discussed many, many, many times.

I just put in "UNBOX quality" and the first 9 threads were on UNBOX specifically and 5 of them had extensive discussion of quality - some of it quite technical and informative even. Since the OP gets to name the thread I do not usually go by thread title alone YMMV

Yep.

I think this is still intended mostly for Series 2 and non-HD sets, on which I would assume it looks not that different from a regular DVD.

I'd say the quality is about "Best" quality TiVo recording, so it's probably more a complement to that, rather than a serious competitor to DVD rentals.

If they just made the videos 16:9 aspect ratio, I think that would improve the quality quite a bit.
