What's up people, heads up: big UFC Saturday night. Every fight on the card is a great fight.

Really looking forward to it. With all the upsets lately I'm worried it'll be a night were Couture and GSP both get demolished. Sure hope that's not the case.
Having about 20 people over to watch it. Can't wait.
I think GSP will dominate but I am concerned about Randy beating Gonzaga. I love Randy but Gonzaga is reallly good. This will be the true test for him though. Should be fun!

That's pretty much how I see it happening as well. I've heard a lot of talk about Kos's wrestling game and seen a lot of people that think he's going to be a tough match up for GSP. I just don't see that happening. GSP took the Serra fight too easy so I'm certain he's going to come out ready to rumble tonight. If Gonzaga beats Couture, I'm going to be extremely disappointed. He's had trouble in the HW division in the past with good ground guys. I hope he can pull this one off.
I'm extremely excited about tonight's event. The card is unbelievable. Something boxing has never done before (that I know of anyway). The only problem is that we won't get to see all the fights. I'd like to see how Frank Mir will do. Also, Babalu and Clay Guida are on the undercard. All we can hope for are some quick finishes so we can see more fights on the PPV. I like GSP against Kos and also think Gonzaga will take care of Randy Couture. Gonzaga is an absolute monster. Less than an hour to go.

BTW - It's good to see another UFC thread around here.
Didn't see it but was surprised to hear how easily Couture handled Gonzaga.

Perhaps a Couture/Fedor matchup wouldn't be the massive mismatch that a lot of folks (including me) figured?
hey Robbins, any chance we can get you to add the word spoilers to the thread title? This way we can openly talk about the results without any backlash.
I kept noticing during the PPV that the mat had a really bloody spot on it from one of the preliminary fights. I thought they might show it later but they only showed one undercard match and that wasn't it.

Turns out that the bloody match was Renato 'Babalu' Sobral vs. David Heath. I wish they would have shown it, not because of the blood but, because it had a very controversial ending. Heath tapped out and the ref stopped it but Babalu kept the choke hold on until Heath passed out.
Babalu should be fired from the UFC.
I want MMA to be considered a mainstream sport (as much as boxing anyway) and things like this don't help the image.

On a more positive note: Go Randy! Can you believe he's 44 years old? Awesome.

Yea, I guess Babalu was fined 1/2 his purse for not letting go of the choke when the ref ended the fight. I liked Babalu before this incident. As far as I'm concerned, there's no excuse for stupid behavior like that.
You can download the Sobral/Heath fight for $1.99 here:

Not much to see in that fight. Sobral essentially was winning and scoring with GnP. That advantage grew after the cut opened on Heath's forehead because the flow affected his vision. The lubricity helped Sobral sink the choke to win.

Then Sobral acted like the convicted criminal that he is and looked at Masegati and tightened the choke even though Heath tapped.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission fined him 1/2 of the purse, and I hope the UFC takes the other half and suspends him for a long time. Combat sports all walk a fine line and behavior like this needs to be eradicated immediately. Sobral is a good one to make an example out of too because he has a name, but his talent has faded to the point where he's an undercard act now. He stands no chance to advance in the division with the likes of Rua, Henderson, Jackson, Liddel, and Silva.

That's a pretty good point. BJ Penn admitted to holding longer on Pulver to teach him a lesson but there wasn't any sort of fine for his behavior. This needs to be stopped now. The UFC has been trying hard to legitimize MMA. I couldn't stand the UFC of old with no rules and no respect for these truly talented athletes.

The Couture fight was absolutely amazing. I put some money on Gonzaga to win but I was rooting for Randy anyway.

According to Sherdog, that wicked Gonzaga kick in the 3rd round? broke a bone in Randy's forearm. Couture is one tough mofo.
I'm totally confused about whether or not spoiler tags are necessary, sorry. Don't click the link unless you want to read a spoiler. http://www.sherdog.net/forums/showthread.php?t=628929
I would say that spoilers tags are pointless at this point. (but I'm not a mod and my opinion means nothing)

Does anyone see that Couture / Gonzaga fight going any differently if GG hadn't gotten his nose broken? I think that sealed the deal for him and he gassed.
Also, how impressive was Roger Huerta? He had some unbelievable submission defense and escapes. I can't wait to see him fight some of the top guys at 155.
Ok, untagged spoliers below.

The thing with BJ was different because the ref wasn't involved yet, it was BJ holding after he felt the tap. He's admitted now what was in his mind, but to me, completely different than the ref waving in your face and trying to pry your arms off.

I agree though Raimi. Sanctioning has helped the sport grow and all of MMA needs to be respectful of that path to keep it clean and exciting.

I had Gonzaga picked in the fight too. Without the broken nose, it could have been different, but Randy really had about the best strategy he could for Gonzaga. Tie him up and use the fence for leverage. Win the clinch game and the strikes that come from it. I think the fact that it was in a cage and not a ring had a lot to do with it and that Randy likely would have won a 5 round decision without the busted nose.

Gonzaga deserves a chance to work his way back into a title shot. give him Arlovski, Silvia, or Nogueria and see how he does.

As for Randy, it's time to sign Josh Barnett, Mark Hunt and Fedor.

On Roger Huerta, it's time to step up his competition a notch. He essentially fought Crane's style of fight and still dominated him. Let's get him in there with Joe Daddy Stevenson or Kenny Florian and see what he really has. On the surface it looks like he's carrying all the tools!

man, Gonzaga sure does kick hard...he broke randy's arm in the 3rd round with that kick randy blocked.

Barnett definitely needs to fight in the UFC again and it looks like he's started calling Randy out so I'd imagine we'll see him in the UFC pretty quick. Hunt would have to drop some weight or he'd be too heavy for the UFC but he did fight under 265 in K1 before so I'm hoping we'll see him pretty soon. I also heard that there's some problem with Hunt fighting in the US due to a criminal record which is why he wasn't able to fight at the Pride event in the US. Not sure how reliable the info is though.

The UFC needs to give Fedor whatever he wants to get him here. It's my understanding that the sticking point right now is his desire to continue to compete in Russian ***** tournaments. Apparently the UFC does not want him to participate in any outside events. Hope they can work it out.

I completely agree regarding Huerta. It's time to see what he's really capable of.

I wondered how Randy survived that high kick but apparently it's because his arm took the brunt of it! Randy is one tough hombre.

Finally the UFC heavyweight division is exciting! Even more so if they can sign Fedor.
Raimi, I was wondering if anyone was astute enough here to know about Hunt's weight. A true fan you are indeed!

I hope he can work it out because he would be entertaining. That guy has a chin!

I agree on Fedor. They simply have to make it happen.

This month will be good. UFC75 next weekend, then EliteXc on the 15th, the Ultimate Fight Night on the 19th and UFC76 on the 22nd. Not bad for an MMA fan.

Yea, I agree. I was getting tired of Silvia - Arlovsky rematches. It's nice to have some great fighters filling out the division now and with Couture in the mix it's even better. Getting Fedor would be the icing on the cake.
