I just noticed something I feel is strange, but maybe I am all wet. I have a Tivo Bolt Vox, connected to my network by ethernet. It has been running great for the 1 month I have had it. I just added a Tivo mini a week ago. It connects to the network with the new wifi usb adapter. I can watch my network traffic (wired, wireless 2ghz & 5ghz). The wired ethernet to the Vox is pumping out data to the wifi router, which is then pumping out the data on the wireless 5 ghz to the Mini. But this data transfer is happening whether the tv (attached to the mini) is on or off. So does this mean the mini has no knowledge of the tv being either on or off? Is there no way to tell the mini that the tv is off and to stop using bandwidth?

There is no way a Mini knows its TV is off. The Mini (wifi 5 or not) talks to the router. The router talks to the host. On the bright side, after 4 hours of Mini inactivity (no remote usage) it will disconnect from its host. Some CEC has been added with the Mini VOX, but I don't use it. Check the remote settings on the Mini, but I think that was meant to power on/off the TV when the TiVo button is hit.

Perhaps someone with a better explanation will post.

JoeK, thanks. I wasn't aware of the 4 hour disconnect, that's better than nothing. And you are right, the remote power on/off just affects the TV.

You can just hit the tivo button on the mini when turning off the TV. That will send it to Tivo Central. IIRC, host dvrs will default back to a live tv tuner after a timeout period at tivo central, but I believe a mini will just sit there relatively indefinitely.

After 15 minutes it goes to a screen saver. TE3 or TE4.

So how do you sleep/turn off/whatever a current gen mini so it stops using bandwidth?

Or is just leaving it paused on a show good enough? (Except then what happens if you resume that show on the Tivo itself?)

Particularly with Wifi I wouldn't want it sitting there running and wasting bandwidth for no reason.

See previous post. I have run three Mini watching HD channels and see no affect on internet performance either. It does affect file transfers a little. Basic Roamio to basic Roamio dropped from 93Mbps to 90Mbps.

I have no idea, nor do I care, how buffers are affected. I do know how they work with Mini assignment, but not on program chasing.

I promise any Mini will not use any resources if they're put it into Standby. It will also ignore EAS tests.

Okay, so you just put them in standby when you're done, which I assume you do from the menu system like on Hydra on a Bolt? That will stop it transmitting/free up everything on the Bolt? That's a few more steps than I'd like, but not too bad.
