TTG File Size

Does anyone know when a show is transferred to your computer, is the file the same as it was on the Tivo? I am especially curious with HD programing. If I transfer a show to my computer & back again, is the file the same as the original? I want to use my computer as storage when my Tivo is full. I already have a 750 gig external drive connected, but I can foresee needing more space once the fall season starts. I know that TTG & TCB are not available until November, but with the number of shows my wife & I are planning to record & the amount of time that we have to watch these shows, the Tivo should be filled up by then.

Yes it is. The only time it would not be the same size is if you set Tivo desktop plus to convert your downloads to one of the supported portable formats. Please note: I do not believe you will to be able to download HD content only standard definition content when TTG is activated for series 3 and HD units.

Your best bet is to use an external drive (ESATA), if you want to free up space. There is a special code(only series 3) . If you search for ESATA or external drive, it should be pretty easy to find. I'd post a link but I can't yet because I have not posted many responses. Good luck

This post from TivoPony implies otherwise.

TiVoToComeBack will initially support HD content originally recorded on a TiVo DVR. It will not support HD content from other sources at this time.
The big question is how long will it take to download HD content to your PC. :)
Thanks for the clarification

I guess we'll have to wait and see if broadcasters are going to hit the copy protection flag on HD content.

You don't have to wait to check. Tune to channels of interest and check the Diagnostics menu for CCI value. CCI=0x0 means no copy protection.

Also, I believe TTG (at least for the S2 platform) comes out in an encrypted .TiVo container form so the file size is a little larger than as stored on the Tivo (and this wrapping process is what limits TTG transfer speed). Don't know if the S3/THD implementation will be the same but I would guess so.
Any update of when this will be available for the Series 3 boxes?

You will be able to Download HD content to your computer as long as the copy flag is set appropriately. IE. You will be able to Download HD content from the Major Networks that are also available from OTA, such as NBC, CBS, ABC, Fox... etc... The Digital channels will vary from channel to channel & show to show. Check the INFO under your recording. It will tell you if there are any restrictions.

Local broadcasters that are also broadcasting OTA such as NBC/CBS/FOX/ABC are barred from preventing that. Cable only channels, and Premium channels are allowed to do what they like.
