Trouble getting into KickStart on Series 4

1722 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  KT88
I have a Tivo that says "Series 4" on the front. I want to perform a hard drive KickStart test on it. I googled "Tivo Series 4" and think it is a "Premiere"

The KickStart info at https://www.weaknees.com/tivo-kickstart-codes.phpsays that there should be yellow/amber flashing light after powering up the Tivo. I never get a yellow light. I tried holding down pause button at various times during the startup process but never get a KickStart screen. I also tried the KickStart instructions for some of the other Tivo models, but can't get into KickStart.

1. Am I correct that I have a Premiere?
2. Why no flashing yellow light?
3. How do I get into KS if I dont get the yellow light?

1: model number from the back of the unit?
2: Sounds like a bad unit, perhaps hard drive or power supply.
3: You don't.
I will have to get the model #, it is actually my parents tivo.

The Tivo does boot to regular Tivo screens, but is very slow, that is why I want to perform a KickStart HD SMART test before cloning the HD
Is there a Tivo menu where I can get the model number? Getting to the back of the tivo to see the model number will be difficult.

In System Information there is the software version. The last three digits are the first three digits of the model number. If there are two coax connectors the it is OTA and Cable. Only one means cable, no OTA.

example: 746500 would look like 20.7.4b.RC3-xxx-x-746.

The hard drive testing through the kickstart portal is not very good. Many times it never finishes but keeps going. You would be better off removing the drive and testing it with the manufacturer's diagnostic (usually wd diagnostic ) with the short test and long read test.

I have the same problem. I got my 2nd TCD746500 running by making an image from my first TCD746500 (that works good). The 2nd DVR also worked perfectly until I discovered it dropped all previous recordings everytime it was restarted. Thinking maybe the problem was that the image was NOT paired to the 2nd DVR, I tried a "Clear & Delete Everything." No joy - now stuck in that mode for many days. I can NOT get the DVR into Kickstart mode, when following the weaknees instructions. For the life of me, I've never been able to invoke a Premiere into Kickstart mode. What am I doing wrong? ...Or does the latest Premiere software update NOT accept Kickstart mode? Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
I used to follow the instructions to enter a KS where it says to hold down Pause for two seconds. Then I found it always works when I just push it for a moment to stop the yellow LED from blinking and start entering the numbers. If you ran the C&DE, the drive is dead. See the bold issue here: Tivo Customer Support Community I have seen posted that a KS 57 will free up your drive. To wipe the box use KS 76543210, but it deletes all data.

OK. As I understand your info, once the box is forever locked in its C&DE loop, it will no longer accept KS codes. I'll make a new image and start over. Thanks much for the info!

I'm sorry if you received that impression. I was able to use KS codes after my C&DE loop. Others have posted the same. It was getting the KS started that I changed to make it work. Just a quick press of Pause as soon as yellow LED displayed, not two seconds. I went all the way with KS 76543210.

But not all TiVo boxes are the same.

OK. Thanks for the clarification. BTW, I did previously try just a quick press of Pause also. No Joy. ...But I'll try again later this afternoon, after I start over on the project. Thanks!
