I've just successfully upgraded a TiVo HD to 750 GB Seagate Drive and had a successfull Fios install with cable cards (pearl in P.S. at the end).

However, I am seeing this fuzzy trasparent static on my HD channels and my TiVo menus, worse on some HD channels than others.

I have an RCA 61 inch std projection with 3D comb filter. Got it at circuit city about 2 years ago. Smaller versions were also featured at Wal Mart for some time.

Also have a $30 RCA HDMI-DVI cable I got at Wal Mart, not the highest quality, but up until now, bargain cables have never given me issues. There are a lot of cables nearby and the HDMI-DVI cable courses right over a fully loaded surge protector, making me think possibly I need a better insulated cable. The static is somewhat reminiscent of what a vacuum turned on had done to TV displays in the past

Of note, when I tried the DirectV HR20 for a week sometime ago (horrible interface), I don't recall this issue despite a similar setup otherwise.

This issue seems to be improved somewhat with video smoothing. I'm hoping somehow I can improve this in other ways too. I'd be happy to share other TiVo or TV settings. I'd really appreciate any ideas or thoughts. Thanks

P.S.-I had a cablecard virgin from Fios. He forgot to call in the U.A. number on the cards which slowed things down. Nothing worked until I found my TV was set to VHF/UHF rather than cable, which had worked fine with DIRECTV. Once I switched this, I was golden, minus the issue above. Hope this helps. If anyone thinks this tidbit deserves its own thread I'd be happy to repost.

Can you describe this static further? If you are referring to a static line at the very top of the picture, that is part of the picture signal. It is supposed to be hidden by the overscan on displays. If your Sony projector does not have any means to apply overscan, then you are going to see that on HD STB/DVR that outputs the full resolution of the signal.

The video smoothing setting does not apply to digital channels.

The transparent fuzziness is throughout the screen. It's like if you took black/white static from a TV without any reception, made it mostly transparent (like the alien in predator) and applied it throughout the screen. I've noticed it on TiVo menus and HD channels. It may be hid by the natural fuzzines of SD channels.

Static throughput the picture is a common issue associated with poor HDMI signal, which is typically the fault of a HDMI cable or switcher. If static is what you are seeing, then I would look first to your HDMI cable(s).

Any recs on a bang for the buck quality hdmi-dvi cable. I refuse to spend $70 on a monster cable unless I absolutely have to.

A Monoprice cable should do fine up to 20'. Beyond 25-30', you may need something better.

have you tried the conventional componet cable hookup? most have reported they could not see a difference with an HDMI cable.

I tried the component cable that came with the TiVo HD last night, comparing it to my HDMI/DVI cable. It appeared a little less sharp and thus the static wasn't as apparent. However, the link to the HDMI cable below shows a very high quality cable (from what I can tell) for $15, and a HDMI/DVI adaptor is like $4. It looks much better insulated than either my current hdmi/dvi cable and is cheaper than most hi quality component cables. I decided to go the adaptor route as I might upgrade to a newer TV soon, especially after realizing my TV can't handle 720p.

That's the cable I use. It works very well.
