I have had TiVo for years and just yesterday I finally set up my Tivo to my wireless network and downloaded some TV programs. When Windows Media Player(v.10) tries to play them, I get an error message. I assume I need these aforemementioned codecs, but when I go to their sites to download them, they want $14.95!!! Does this mean just to play a TiVo video I have to cough up 15 bucks? The Windows Player works fine with emailed files normally. I have a lot to learn about this networked stuff now, so I need some help.

The Windows Player works fine with emailed files normally.

Then they're not MPEG-2. Basically you need an MPEG-2 codec - that's the compression used by TiVo, DVD, and some others. The emailed files that play OK are probably using a difference codec, like WMV9/VC-1. It sounds like you don't have an MPEG-2 codec on that PC, most users would have one from having DVD software installed - same codec.

I have Sonic My DVD that came installed in my PC when I bought it. Shouldn't that have the codec? What else can I do...

What version of My DVD software did it come with. I know Tivo recomends the 6.1 version. On the other hand I've used other DVD software products on my PC, and they've all seem to work well playing Tivo files and DVDs. The problem that just started happening to me is slow audio. After I've transfered some video to my PC the audio slowly goes out of sync with the video. Has anyone seen that yet?

If you can play DVDs on your PC, it should have the codec needed for .TiVo files.

"An error message" is not detailed enough to help us help you. What exactly did it say? Windows error messages are occasionally quite useful in figuring out what's wrong and how to fix it.

In addition to the proper codec, you also need the decryption filter. That gets installed along with the TiVo Desktop software. How did you download the shows from your TiVo?

I just downloaded the video codec that is recommended above. And I am happy now because at least I have video now. But now the video is displayed in a perfect square instead of a rectangle the way it used to be so it is sort of distroted. Anybody have a recommendation for me so I can change how it is displayed? Or mayb ethere is a different video codec that will allow me to view the video display more normally (if that makes sense)? I used to use an elecard (I think thats the name) codec and it had a great display for me to view my tivo shows but now this new one just looks weird.

You need a codec, perhaps a paid one.
