I have a Series 2 TIVO (Toshiba) w DVD-R. I want to buy a new Dual-Channel TIVO.

Is it possible to transfer shows from one TIVO to another ? My Series 2 TIVO (Toshiba) w DVD-R is already on an Ethernet Wired Home Network.

Yes, as long as it is on the same tivo account. It is called Multi-Room Viewing or MRV. If memory serves me (I watch primarily my S3 which doesn't support MRV), once you get your other Tivo connected to your network, you should see it show up at the bottom of the now playing list. You can then browse and transfer shows between the two.

as of today this will only work if you buy the S2DT non of the S3 models will do MRV

Actually, the main reason I needed a Dual-Channel TIVO was because I needed to record LOST and MEDIUM, and they air at the same time.

But NBC just decided to postpone MEDIUM's 3rd Season until January. So now I'm in no hurry at all - maybe TIVO will straighten out Series 3 by then. And lower the price, too !

SalemCat - If memory serves me correctly, the Toshiba model that you have comes with TiVoBasic with the ability to upgrade to TiVoPlus (or full featured version of TiVo).

You will need TiVoPlus to what you are asking. ie. you must be paying for your TiVo service either monthly or through a lifetime subscription. TiVoBasic does not support your request.

I am guessing that you have the full blown version of TiVo if you are on an Ethernet connection, but just want to make sure that you know the differences between the 2 levels of service.

Yes, I have full TIVO. I discovered immediately the free lifetime service that came bundled with the Toshiba DVR DVD-R was pretty useless.

Using MRV, can I just WATCH a show that is on one TIVO on another TIVO on my wired home network, or do I have to TRANSFER (copy or move) the show first ?

It TRANSFERs (copies) the show. However you can watch while it is transfering.

Transfer in this case means copy.

When MRV is done, you'll have the same show on both Tivos.

Whether it is TIVO, Apple, or MicroSoft, they all like to use different words for the same thing. Like when Windows changed the terminology from DIRECTORIES to FOLDERS. wow, thanks MS, what an improvement - not.

With Vista it is unbelievable all the strange places my files get stored by default. Now it takes me minutes instead of seconds to find anything.

Hey... great timing with the thread, I'm in the same boat...

I have the Toshiba DVD-R TiVo and looking to get another (which right now is basically limited to the 2 tuner one since I don't have HD).

I swear I remember reading around here once that with the DVD-Rs they use a different video format (something about MPEG-2 for the DVD recordings?) and therefore the videos wouldn't play on regular TiVo's. Do I remember wrong? Did a software upgrade fix and/or change that?

Oh, and P.S. I have a lifetime on my Toshiba TiVo, which I know makes me eligible for the multi-service discount. Is my understanding correct that I get $6 off the regular price? Meaning the 3 year commitment would be $6.95/month, 2 year would be $8.95, etc? Lastly, is there a way to do a pre-paid plans for the multi-service discount?

Yep, you remember wrong. You can transfer shows from any Series 2 to another Series 2 and view them with no problems. But you can't transfer shows to a TiVo with a DVD burner and burn them to a disc. This includes TiVoToGoBack and MRV transfers. You can't burn them. The show must be recorded by the TiVo with DVD burner in order to be burned to disc.

Regarding your question on pricing. Yes, you will get $6 off the monthly price.

This includes TiVoToGoBack and MRV transfers. You can't burn them. The show must be recorded by the TiVo with DVD burner in order to be burned to disc.

Ah, *thats* what that was. That's good to know since its no big deal for me personally. I hardly ever burn things through the DVD-R, and now with TiVoToGo there's no need to.

Cool, and no prepaid option for MSD, right? If they'd offer me 3 years for $175 or $199 or something instead of $6.95/month I'd probably do the prepaid.
