I've been using WinAvi on the PC and more recently VisualHub on the Mac to transcode video to the right MPEG2 format for TiVo. Both of these have worked pretty well (with VisualHub seeming to run both faster and produce better PQ than WinAvi running on the same machine). Since my setup has worked reasonably well I haven't really kept up with new developments until I saw the new release of TiVo Desktop Plus which it looks like supports the ability to transcode on the fly certain video formats so I could just put the files directly in the TiVo folder and then transfer. Looking around a bit more it seems that PyTiVo does the same thing and maybe a couple of other programs as well.

So a couple of purposes to this thread:

1) Is there an agreed upon "best" solution for transcoding on the fly?
2) Since I've missed this development I'm wondering if I've missed other cool new features that have been added?

Specifically I'm wondering if there is a way to start the transfer to the TiVo from the PC side. I'd love to have the transfer to start automatically as soon as VisualHub is finished. I think Galleon was supposed to be able to do something like that, but I was never able to get it to work.

Thanks
Dylan

Both accomplish the same basic task. pyTiVo supports more formats, has more options and is free, but it can also be more complicated to set up and use. If you're the techy type who likes to tinker with settings then you'll probably like pyTiVo. If you just want a quick no hassle option to transfer DivX files TiVo Desktop Plus is as simple as entering the key and plopping your DivX files in your My TiVo Recordings folder.

Is there a way to transcode DVD's or AVI's files and then move to Tivo automatically as if they were originally recorded by the Tivo? That is add show information as well as have the Tivo sort the shows as well as have them roll up within proper "groups"? I have been looking to transcode some TV Show DVD's and put them on the Tivo. I have a SA S2.. many thanks

TiVo.Net does some of that. You can manually enter in the show information, description, year, episode info, etc. through the admin interface so that when it's sent back to the TiVo the Program Details screen shows that information.

However, they still won't group.
