I've searched all over the forum and can't find an answer to this question. Sorry is it's been asked and answered before...

I've got an old Roamio that I've been avoiding updating because I don't want to lose all the old programming. I know it's possible to initiate a transfer using TiVo Online but I've been unable to determine if this moves the files through the TiVo servers (consuming my monthly bandwidth) or if it transfers box-to-box on my local network.

Also, would I need to upgrade the OS on the Roamio to do this? Software version is 20.7.4b.xxx

box-to-box

no need to upgrade your software

Transfers are localized to your home network.

But you only mention a single box and software version. What is the OS and version of the box to which you're looking to transfer the content?

Also "upgrading" is ambiguous. Do you mean a DIY hard drive upgrade, or upgrading the Roamio from TE3 to TE4 software? (Hard drive upgrades *can* be done w/o losing content/settings; and nothing is lost in the TE3-to-TE4 upgrade; content and settings are only lost if you later decide to revert back to TE3 ... though there are new concerns with regards to TE4-to-TE3 downgrades.)

I meant an upgrade as-in replacement. I've just ordered an Edge for Cable which I assume will have the latest OS / TE installed.

I'm assuming I can just move the CableCARD from my Roamio to the new Edge and I don't need two CableCARDs in order to transfer recording from the old box to the new box.

Heh, I missed *that* upgrade option.

Yes, a new EDGE box can only run the new TE4/Hydra UI software. And transferring from the Roamio to the TE4 EDGE *would* require the use of TiVo Online to initiate the transfers (though the actual transfers will remain LAN-only). Further, transfers require that both boxes have an active TiVo service plan; however, the CableCARD isn't relevant to transfers, so you can get the CableCARD moved to the new box and get it recording without concern for the transfer project.

It's recommended that both boxes be wired to your network if you'll be doing bulk transfers, both for speed and reliability.
