Toshiba RS-TX20 and DTAs

My cable provider Wide Open West is switching over to all digital network and all FIVE of my pre-2K sets have no digital tuners and are each connected to a Toshiba RS-TX20 so WoW sent me five DTAs (model DMS-2002u).

The recommendation is to drape the TiVo RF IR Blaster over the sensor of the DTA BUT I tossed those TiVo RF IR emitters long ago as I did not use or need them (so I thought at the time). So before I order five darn Blasters from TiVo for $7 a pop plus shipping, I have three basic questions:

1) Has anybody out there gotten a DTA to work with their Toshiba RS-TX20 with or without the emitter/sensor setup?

2) Can I use a stereo 3.5mm cable to connect the TiVo IR port directly to the DTA IR port thus eliminating the emitter/sensor mess?

3) Wide Open West's DTA FAQ says the following, "Series 1 and 2 TiVo boxes are compatible with Digital Adapters and other WOW! Digital equipment. The TiVo requires IR Remote code 10084 to program the Tivo to work with your WOW! Digital Adapter." I have run the guided setup on quite a few TiVo boxes and cannot figure out where to enter that code. Any ideas?

1) I don't have a Toshiba.

2) Do NOT connect them directly - use ggray's cable. It takes additional circuitry to make the voltage levels etc compatible. See http://grayeng.net/TiVotoComcast.htm for details.

3) In the channel changing menu click the Advanced option to pick the code directly. If you can't find the Advanced option you can pick Evolution, Homecast, or Transparent Video Systems from the standard menu. Those 3 choices all have code 10084 in the list of codes to try.

@ggieseke Thanks for the suggestions, I am taking a long, hard look at ggray's cable as I think "draping" the emitter over the DTA sensor is hit-or-miss at best and just looks messy imho.

Prior to posting here I did email TiVo support with the same questions (that darn July 18th cable transition date is LOOMING!) and here's their response:

To begin with, as long as the DTAs are serial control compatible, you can absolutely hook them up that way! Many of them do not have serial control enabled, however, so you may want to check with WOW to make sure it will work. Once you have hooked up the serial cable and verified it is compatible, just repeat Guided Setup from Messages & Settings > Restart or Reset System > Repeat Guided Setup.

If serial control is not enabled, we can send you the IR blasters either via the website or over the phone at 877-367-8486. The IR code can be entered specifically at TiVo Central > Messages & Settings > Settings > Channels > Channel Changing, and you can also view this article for further information:

In most cases, it will automatically choose the proper IR code based on the brand of DTA/cable box you select during Guided Setup. The DMS series is made by Evolution, which has the default code 10084.

Please let us know if you have any problems with either serial or IR hookup!

I'll probably end up ordering one of ggray's cables as a test just because it is a more elegant solution and I think deserving of the support for his putting in the time and effort! Thanks again and best regards.

I don't think any of the DTAs have serial ports. The box from WOW that's shown on their website certainly doesn't.

Yes
I have used the TX20 with the DTV pal and the channel master CM7000 and it works great.
I just used the standard blaster cable in front of the DTV converter sensors.. works fine.

I actually have my TX 20 functioning as a dual tuner by running into a 1 in, 2 out antenna line amp....then running one side of the output to the Tivo[with S video out to the TV] and the other directly to the 75 ohm input on the TV.
This way you can record something on Tivo while watching something else.

DTVPal and CM-7000 are not DTA's.

I've got a Toshiba RS-TX20 working with a Comcast DTA. I just use the regular IR cable that came with the Tivo.

The Comcast DTA only has an RF output, but the Toshiba RS-TX20 will only use the composite input if you only have one input source. You have to run guided setup and tell the Tivo that you have both cable and satellite to get the Tivo to accept RF input.

When you are done with guided setup, go back to your channel listings and tell the tivo that both the cable and satellite lineups are wrong and then select only the cable lineup again.

For a over the air antenna, what i did to get the DTV Pal or the Channel master CM7000 working with the Toshiba TX20 was..do a channel set up search on either one of these DTV converters..adjust your roof antenna to receive the maximum number of channels at the maximum strength[use the on board signal strength meter]..then hook up the RF blaster cable from the back of the Toshiba to the front over the LCD of the DTV converter.
Then go into the Tivo menu and do the diagnostic RF blast channel sync test, to sync the Tivo with the converter box.
