finally.....

For years, I wanted a TiVo, I remember being in somewhere like Currys or Comet years ago where they were selling them off cheap, and I passed up the chance... Years later, I was scouring websites and ebay, but the popularity of TiVo astounded me, and outstretched my budget... they were going on ebay for £200+, and this was purely for modded hard drives, no lifetime subscriptions..

2 weeks ago, I could resist no more, maybe a little too much vino (or was it beers) and I'd thrown in a bid of £40 on ebay, plus £10 delivery... Jackpot!!

Remembering the crazy prices doing the rounds a couple of years earlier, I felt £40 was a bargain, for a bog standard box, 40gb HD, Subscription to be determined...

Finally the parcel arrived, unboxed it, woah... its a big un!

But from the initial setting up the cables, then turning it on... I feel like I found a new best friend, even the process of setup, clearing the system, dialling up, downloading... the fact I was involved made it all so friendly... Unlike the anonymous SKY+ box which is literally a plug and play..

When everything was setup, it was time to open a TiVo account, dialling the number...dammit, it was 11.32pm, and apparently Customer Services closes at 11.30pm....

Just registered now, might take a while, but I'm loving what it is... the menu system is so friendly, the features I know its capable of are pretty damn exciting, so it has 1 tuner... but it learns what i watch, thats what I need....

Need to upgrade it, its a pretty basic model at the moment, but this one has prospects....

I'll be asking a shed-load of advice over the next few weeks, but I can't help but look forward to using TiVo a lot... It's scary that its nearly 10 years old, yet is more advanced than some current systems...

Can't be more than 7 years old actually as a UK Tivo. It might even be no more than a month or two older than 6 years depending on the Tivo Service Number. Only in the USA did they have Tivos as long ago as 1998. They didn't start here till Autumn 2000.

Its great you have finally joined the fold but such a shame that you didn't manage to get one of the £99 units in the second half of 2002.

I hope the Tivo lives up to your expectations.

I don't think saying 7 years is not the same as 10 years is splitting hairs.

As to the resident pedant I notice that when he is rarely wrong on a matter he either doesn't reply or then claims that one is changing the goalposts.

Speaking of which I can only he assume he must be away on holiday this week judging from the silence in that quarter.

I can assure you I will be staying 45 then 46 etc for as long as possible with no question of the big 50 ever being mentioned until the dreaded day finally dawns.

Rounding is normally only applied to decimals between whole integers and not by rounding whole integers up to the next multiple of 10.

Maybe not by you, but it's very common to round up integers.

But it is not at all common practice (indeed I have never seen it done) to round up 7 years to be 10 years. My nephew is 7 so would he accept it if I told him he was almost 10 - no certainly he would not.

It largely comes down to percentages. Increasing 7 to 10 is an increase of nearly 50% in the total value., which is therefore not rounding up just for the sake of clarity or simplicity.

Had the statement been "Tivo is well over half way to being 10 years old" that would of course be an entirely fair and accurate statement.

No one suggested you were a muppet and I am sorry to hear that you could possibly have drawn any such conclusion.

I think that the OP was meaning that as a design/product/system TiVo was 10 years old, rather than his specific one.

Since Pete's claiming the oldest TiVo, you can see why he's being pedantic about ages. Me, I'm thinking between 'big deal' and 'meh'.

This was merely aimed as a helpful piece of extra information to the OP of the kind we see proffered time and again here by TCM2007.

There was no attempt on my part to be unwelcoming to or critical of the new forum member but then sadly another longstanding forum member chose to misinterpret my comments in that way.

I think we should move on from this minor issue and get back to discussing why the Tivo is such a great device and why our new forum member will undoubtedly enjoy using its many unique features not found in other lesser PVRs.
