As the new fall television programming commences, TiVo Inc. (Nasdaq: TIVO), the creator of and a leader in advertising solutions and television services for digital video recorders (DVRs), reports that Private Practice and Bionic Woman were the only two premiere shows that penetrated TiVo's Top 50 Season Passes, ranking at #18 and #43 respectively.

Although it is interesting to note that "Journeyman" and "Dirty Sexy Money" just missed the cut off at #54 and #55 respectively. Nothing even came close last year.

I list my season passes ( at least start of season) by day, ( makes it easier to schedule what show goes to what Tivo/Dvr) so my new shows are all over the place, my top 20 season passes is nothing near my top 20 shows.

This is a lame statistic.

New SPs go to the bottom of the list, as a rule. So, duh, of course......
are you sure that the Top 50 list is weighted based on where TiV owners place them in their priority list?

I would think it would simply be a list based on the total number of times the season pass has been set for that show.

I think I sorta agree with doug here. The more I look at the list, the more I don't get it.

Studio 60 is shown as one of the biggest falls for the 2007 premier week. What gives? The show was CANCELLED!! There is no more Studio 60.

Obviously, people still keep SPs around for cancelled shows (heck, I've done it myelf for a while fro some shows). But really, should they even COUNT if the show doesn't exist? Or even if they don't air until much later (like American Idol?? ) I',m guilty there, too, as I keep SPs kicking around, even if no new episodes will air for some time.

Perhaps (I'm not keeping track) but it's not because TiVo lovers don't record the show (wasn't there just a new episode with Seinfeld? So it's still on in 2007). I think it's fair to include the shows ranking in the list, particularly if it has been cancelled.

No, you've got that wrong. It was 30 Rock that had Seinfeld on.

That would be "30 Rock", not "Studio 60". And if they're measuring the 2007 fall season, then Studio 60 - and any other programs (George Lopez, According to Jim, Drive - ANY other shows that have been cancelled and would only be airing in reruns in syndication) should NOT be included. Gees, that's not too hard for them to figure out, is it? Just makes the whole thing worthless in my book. Gosh, someone has an SP for "I Love Lucy" - better rank that????

ETA: Again, typing much too slowly!

I think the worst part of this report is the use of the word "only". Compared to last year, it seems that MORE new shows made the grade this year especially in light of what Vito said, above. However, the first week's stats are really best used as a baseline for comparison, to watch how shows drop off SP as the weeks go on. Does TiVo publish these stats weekly?

I wonder if they counted the shows that I didn't create SP's for due to the HD Dish PVR I picked up. I'm likely not the only one. There are at least 4 or 5 new shows that would have been SP's, had my Tivo been HD-compat. I can't be the only one.
