or should I say 'can' it send to a A/V receiver via HDMI?

Other than PCM being a two channel 'lossless' transmission method, what surround sound formats (Dolby and otherwise) does it send out assuming the program material is in one of those surround formats (not just plain 'stereo' or mono)?

On my Yamaha RX-V675 A/V receiver, if I use the "Straight" sound program mode (no decoding) it shows 2 active channels.
When I switch the decoder to "Dolby ProLogic II Movie", it shows all 6 speaker channels active (no sub or center), but it's not obvious if it is just the receiver that is creating it's 'surround' sound, or actually decoding what is being sent from the TiVo (OTA Roamio if it matters).

Is it at least 5.1 that can be decoded for it's internal surround sound decoder(s)?

Maybe I should of worded it;
What file formats can this send via PCM?

According to this, these types can be sent/encoded via 2 channel PCM, but I find it hard to believe these supposedly marvelous TiVo's only send 70's "stereo".

That list is for PCM file formats and not for PCM format data sent via S/PDIF on a digital optical audio/TOSLINK connection. This isn't a TiVo issue.

S/PDIF - Wikipedia

S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface)[1][2] is a type of digital audio interconnect used in consumer audio equipment to output audio over reasonably short distances. The signal is transmitted over either a coaxial cable with RCA connectors or a fiber optic cable with TOSLINK connectors. S/PDIF interconnects components in home theaters and other digital high-fidelity systems.

S/PDIF is based on the AES3 interconnect standard.[3] S/PDIF can carry two channels of uncompressed PCM audio or compressed 5.1/7.1 surround sound (such as DTS audio codec); it cannot support lossless surround formats that require greater bandwidth.[4]
