TivoHD Network weirdness

1628 Views 24 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  windracer
I'm using WiFi with my TivoHD. Since the first time I installed the wireless adapter it connected just fine to my network no problem and connected to the Internet.

After a less than a day it looses its connection to the Internet. It is still connected to my wireless network with a great signal. It says that it can't connect to the gateway. All the IP info is fine, the network has never had a glitch. I reboot the Tivo and it connects right up and everything is fine. I've done static and dynamic IP's and still no love.

Any ideas on whats wrong with this thing?

Thanks!

The Tivo only connects once every 2-3 days to download guide data.

After the first day, it is no longer able to connect? When you click "Test Network Connection" under Settings -> Phone and Network, you get an error?

If you use wireless encryption, I assume you've got all your settings entered correctly?
It does connect to my wireless network just fine. It shows it connected, has a valid IP shows a strong signal etc. But when I try to force a connection it fails telling me if the gateway isnt responding.

Having guide data lag is one thing, but none of the Internet services like TivoCast don't work either which is annoying.

So again, this thing does connect to the network just fine and the network itself is working great. It just never works 2 days in a row.

It might help if you mention what wireless router you're using, what settings you're using on the router, what wireless adapter you're using for your tivo etc.

Sure thing. I am using a Belkin F5D9230-4 and I tried swapping out for a Linksys WRT54G with no change. The Tivo is using the TiVo Wireless G USB Network Adapter. Using WPA encryption.
Can you hook the THD directly to the router with an ethernet cable? If that works, I would suspect the wireless adapter. If that does not work, I would wonder about the router settings, etc.
Unfortunately I really can't get a cable over there. I am quite confident that the router is fine as I use it constantly with other computers and never have any trouble and I did try swapping the router out.

OK, I guess I'll call Tivo and see if they will send me a new wireless adapter or something.

Thanks
My other thought would be to rerun the network portion of guided setup and ensure that the wireless setup is correct, including WPA.
I have done that several times as well. Just got off the phone with Tivo and they had me do it again. Now I need to wait till it fails again before calling back.
Interestingly enough, I'm having the exact same problem. Works for a couple of days and then gets a gateway error. The odd thing is that after seeing the error, if I reset my router, the Tivo will be able to connect which leads me to believe it's a router problem. On the other hand, I have multiple Tivos, so I moved the adapter to a different TiVo and the gateway problem followed the adapter. So now I don't know what the heck is wrong.
Just out of curiosity, what router are you using? While my router works fine for several other devices, perhaps its the combination of the Tivo adapter and a series of routers?
It's a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router with SRX200, Model #WRT54GX2 and I'm using WPA2 encryption.

Why not shut off WPA2 for a while? Maybe that might do it?

If it's a Linksys you should be able to use the MAC address filter type security instead.
OK, so we are talking about a couple of different routers. I'm guessing yours is like mine that if you look at the settings it shows as being connected to the wireless network, shows a strong signal etc.

I wonder now if it really is power cycling the router or if perhaps its just that the wireless signal goes away then comes back which forces the Tivo needs to renegociate the connection?

Good question? Does power cycling your router fix your issue (temporarily)?
Yes it does. I should have mentioned that originally. I just usually reboot the Tivo since getting to the router is a bit of a pain to get to.
I suspect it might be a bad wireless adapter.

If you got the adapter at a B&M store, I'd try exchanging it for another.
Are you using DHCP? If so, you should make sure that the DHCP lease time is set to 0 so that clients can stay connected indefinately. Just a thought.
It’s been long enough now that I can’t easily exchange it, but am still under the 90 day warrantee. So I call last Saturday to try and take care of this.

After about 15 minutes on hold I get an agent after getting my case # she asks me all the same questions again. She says “I need to research something can I put you on hold for two minutes?” I say sure….. after not hearing from her for 45 minutes I give up.

Today I call again. After doing some research the agent comes back and finally says that it sounds like a bad adapter. He then suggests that I try to return it. Explain that its past the 30 day return at the store so I need to warrantee it. He then tells me that they don’t warrantee the Tivo Adapter I bought unless I bought it directly from Tivo. I ask for a manager because I know this thing has a 90 day warrantee on it. He disappears for about 10 minutes, then tells me he was mistaken and they will cover it.

So now he says he needs to escalate to level 2 to arrange the exchange. Great I say. He transfers me. On hold with that great music repeating and repeating for 30 minutes….. now the line just went dead.

Is it just me or does Tivo’s service totally blow? I mean I have this annoying little problem that should have been a no brainer to try to fix and I have wasted hours on the phone and I’m still not done.

Wow, just wow
