TivoHD Hard Drive Upgrade...painless

1949 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  bkdtv
I'd rank myself an 8.5 on a scale of 1-10 for computer hardware and software knowledge. I've been building and tweaking systems for myself and family since my original 386. For the last twelve years I've been programming games and know my way around the ins and outs of DirectX and Windows MFC.

Needless to say, when I opted to undertake the upgrading of my TivoHD, I read the forms, supported MFSLive and got a DB35 drive from TheNerds. I opted to set aside two hours for the upgrade and was optimistic. Today I girded my loin and dove in...

Wow! Probably one of the first times everything has gone as stated. I think it took me all of 20 minutes to upgrade to a 500gig drive.

Simple, painless and very straight forward. Thank you MFSLive and TC members.

WinMFS makes things so much easier. Especially if you have the USB to Sata adapters so you don't have to crack open the PC case and disconnect anything.
i am very computer illiterate...so please bare with me.

can you hook up a regular external hard drive to the tivo hd? if so, how would you do so? is is as simple as hooking one up to a pc or is it more involved?

thanks 10.
Not yet, as far as I know. The Series 3 supports external hd through a hack that can be searched for but the TiVoHD doesn't have the esata port activated yet.

If you are computer illiterate, you may want to wait until Tivo officially supports eSATA expansion on the TivoHD. Tivo has not announced when they will do it, but many expect it to happen before the end of the year. Tivo suggested as much to some TivoHD reviewers.
tivo is selling a mybook external hard drive on their website...is that what we've been waiting for to expand the drives on the tivo hd? or is that for the series 3 only?

TiVo does not sell a My Book.

TiVo sells the My DVR Expander. That is not a My Book.

But yes, that is the product we were waiting for. It is "plug and play" with both the TivoHD and Series3. Be sure to see the eSATA sticky at the top of the forum for more information.
