TivoHD hard drive question

Hi,
I see the TivoHD comes with a 160GB hard drive. I'd like to take advantage of the lifetime subscription transfer which can only be done if you buy the TivoHD direct from Tivo. I don't see anything on their web site about upgrading the disk size. I also see, on this site, DVRupgrade, that sells disk upgrades.

Why wouldn't Tivo sell larger disks when you buy the unit (as an option of course) and save me the trouble of having to upgrade it later?

Do you have to buy largers disks from third party companies only?
Thanks in advance,
Steve

Tivo doesn't sell any larger sized drives. Maybe after the THD has been out for a while (kind of like we saw 40 and 80 hour versions of the S2).

Just get the upgraded drive from Weakness or DVR Upgrade and swap them out. It's easy as pie and takes about 10 minutes.
most likely the cost of managing stock of multiple skus exceeds the value they believe customers would see in the differentiation.
Nope, I bought a 1TB drive from newegg and am going to use winmfs to prep the 1TB drive.
From the forums here, it looks reasonably easy.. we'll see how my progress goes
Thanks for the quicl reply. Another question though.

When I buy the TivoHD, do I install the larger disk before or after I activate it?
Thanks again,
Steve

multiple people here have verified you don't have to buy direct from Tivo.

It doesn't matter.

However, since you void the Tivo warranty when you replace the drive, I would suggest that you get the box activated/working fully (including CableCARD activation/pairing). When you are satisified that everything is fine, do the upgrade.

If he does, won't the cablecards have to be re-paired once the hard drive is swapped out?

No, not if he uses mfscopy in winmfs. The copy also copies the cc pairing info stored on the hard drive.

That's why I say get it all set up, then do the copy. Then you also have the benefit of a working backup (the original hard drive).
A very informative thread.
I'm picking up a 1TB drive on sale at Best Buy today and expect shipment of my TivoHD this week. I'll schedule the cablecard install, make sure all works and then upgrade the drive via mfscopy in winmfs

Absolutely right - I still had the weakness or DVR prepared upgrade drive stuck in my head - that would need the re-pair, since you're not copying anything to them, yes?

Correct...
Fully activate it first, (with CC if necessary) then do the upgrade.
Then pack the original drive up in the HD packaging and keep somewhere safe.
This drive can be used to get the TiVo working again after any hard drive mishap in the future. Don't reuse the 160G drive, they aren't worth all that much anyway.

Just a suggestion.

Cool thanks.

Considering an upgrade of me own, want to make sure that I've got the right set of facts.

I'm sorry, I'm still not clear. If you go the weaknees drive route (big drive prepared by weakness and just swap out drives) does the cable card need to be paired again?
Other threads have spoke about an acoustic setting (w/WD drives, I believe). Is this done via winmfs?

No. Hitachi Drive Feature Tool will do it.

Where do I get this?

You have to pardon my ignorance, but I'm a Mac user, so I'll have to "borrow" a friend's PC to do a drive upgrade and want to make sure I have all the info I need.

I have a THD on order. Plan to activate it with original drive and Comcast CCs. Once everything checks out, then do the upgrade. It looks like the WD 500G is the best bang for the buck.

The way I understand it (as clarified by this thread) is that CC pairing data is stored on the hard drive.

If you pair the cable cards and then copy your original Tivo drive onto a new, blank drive, you will be good to go.

If you buy a weakness style pre-prepared drive, the CC pairing data will not be there, since you're not copying anything off of your original drive. The preferred COA for this would then be to install the drive first, then get the CC paired so that the pairing data is on the big drive.

Clear as mud? ;)
