Can I still program the Tivo box to record Battlestar Galactica every Friday at 10 maunally or would I have to set it every week? Right now the service fee costs too much...

The cheapest way to get a DVR & it still be a Tivo is to buy a Series 1 off of ebay. I got one for about $60 which inclued shipping. You can find them cheaper, just be sure & read the auction closley!.

A Series 1 doesn't do season passes & I get a the nag screen but I can manually set a recording, like for Sci-Fi friday, just don't forget to set a bumper time on the back side just incase the unit's clock is off!

I don't know what the Cable company charges-I wanted always Free not just a cheap monthly fee.

I've been using a Series 1 without service for 5 years and the clock is now 2 minutes slow.

Not bad.
If you plug it into a phone line to dial in to the server, one of the first things it does is sets the clock. Once it sees the service isn't active, it disconnects, but the colck would be adjusted.

The modem burned up 5 years ago, that's why I let the service lapse. The cheap external modem fix was not around then. Also, I would need to update the software to use the external modem now. I never got it fixed because I already had 2 other Tivo's with lifetime service.

It serves my needs as the 2ed Tivo on my main TV.

I believe you'd still be paying. Last I knew cable companies don't give services for free.
and if you have analog cable you will need to pay the cable company monthly for the upgrade to digital to get the cable co DVR/

I have seen DVRs for 50$ that will record by time ;)

Actually, all you need to do is redo the guided set-up once a week, and the first call (toll free 800#) resets the clock.
