TIVO Streaming - Wireless Performance

Now that the TIVO Premeire have been updated to allow streaming. I wanted to check in and see two things specifically to wireless

- Have people been able to use it succesfully over Wireless?
- If so what is the wireless set up? Assuming N to be succesfull but in specific:

is it 5ghz or 2.4 ghz ?
20 or 40 Mhz ?
What Hardwared (D-Link, Netgear, Trednet) (Wireless Bridges or Adapters)?
What throughput are you seeing in your home Wireless LAN as the minimum to make it work.

The main reason I ask is that I have one TIVO Premiere Elite right now but I figure once I get another one it would be good to know this information.

NOTE: TIVO has said the best way is Wired or COAX but i wanted to focus in on those that try it wireless

I have it working correctly

1.- Have people been able to use it succesfully over Wireless? YES

2.- If so what is the wireless set up? Assuming N to be succesfull but in specific:
is it 5ghz or 2.4 ghz ? I had it working on both. 2.4 had 130 mbps, 5 had up to 180 mpbs
20 or 40 Mhz ?
What Hardwared (D-Link, Netgear, Trednet) (Wireless Bridges or Adapters)? I use the Netear WNCE3001
What throughput are you seeing in your home Wireless LAN as the minimum to make it work. Tranferring shows I am seeing around 50mbps throughput (tivo to tivo)

Will both devices be connected wirelessly or just one? That will affect performance a lot.

Can I ask why you don't want to use Coax/MoCA? Your Elite has a built in MoCA adapter already and you have coax going into the rooms already for TV.

I could technically do MOCA if I wanted to but my current set up has a dedicated Wireless N 5GHZ Network purely for Media Streaming. There is a wireless G 2/4ghz for "Other" stuff.

I wanted to see what people experieince are with wireless first. Granted lots of people can have different experieince based on distance to router, walls, hardware.

The best measuring stick I guess would be throughput. How much wireless bandwidth do you need to have to handle the streaming.

I have the TiVo Wireless N adapter and I stream from my computer. When I use the 5GHZ spectrum; I am getting about the same rate as the 2nd poster on this thread; about 180-200Mbps . 1080p movies that are around 2 hours long still take almost 20 minuets to transfer fully (usually around 10-14 GB files); but if I give it about a 5 minute "headstart" I can start watching immediately with little to no jitters

I am using as LINKSYS E2000 Router; the "source" (my Mac) is connected via hardline to the router.

Streaming from the computer? Is that using TIVO Desktop?

I had 2 wireless G USB adapters with 95%+ signal strength connected at 54mbps to an Apple N dual band router and it was not enough juice as the streaming constantly buffered. I have since upgraded to TiVo's wireless N adapter and am getting a 98% connection with 240-300mbps on the 5ghz band and have no issues. Wired ethernet is definitely not a requirement for smooth MRS.

Looks like then if you can reach 200 Mbps / 25 MBps then streaming will work. Now to reach these you would need a Wireless N Network probably runnign on 5 GHZ.

aRe people running at 20 MHz, 40 MHz or Auto?

The rates people are giving you are the physical radio transmission rates. This includes error correction, repeat signals, etc. Generally a higher radio link rate means more data but it can vary tremendously. This is why a "54mbps" wireless G connection can rarely transfer a 12-15 mbps ATSC video transmission in real time.

However, wireless n has a high enough radio bitrate that most people with relatively new hardware get high enough data rates that they can stream successfully. Obviously the more devices you have connected wirelessly the worse your results will be.

I think that what you want to do, once you have the other Tivo, is test the transfer speed between the two devices. I think that a few users with 30-40 mbps transfer rates have reported good results with wireless n.

This is a roundabout way of saying that you won't really know for sure if your wireless network will support MRS until you try it out.

The MoCA technology built into your Elite provides almost everyone who uses it with 80-90 mbps real world transfer rates and very high quality streaming. This is why Tivo recommends it and so many cable providers are adopting it for in-home streaming.

Using pyTivo; i dont use tivo desktop.

I do occasionally use "Tivo Transfer" (a feature of Roxio Toast for Mac) to take copy shows to my computer. they transfer over in .tivo format but Roxio auto-converts them (afterwards) to .m4v

Not all the way true. I have mine operating on the 2.4 gig range at 20mhz and get about 130 connection and have no issues streaming

Just got my new 2nd tivo and set it up. Streaming working very good.
Using 2.4Mhz N
Unknown speed. (Weird setup. Combo wifi/cable modem from Time Warner to a linksys e2000 router w/ddwrt setup with client bridge mode via wifi to the cable modem wifi)
40mhz
Downloading an HD file at 30Mb/s down from the internet and doing tivo streaming and its fine. all wirelessly. Im impressed!

Network: Wireless N 5 Ghz Auto 20/40
Wireless Router: D-Link DIR-825
Wireless Bridge: D-Link DAP-1522
