I'm just starting the process of upgrading from an older Tivo Series 2 ST to a new Series 3 HD Tivo. I've run through the setup process and it's able to connect wirelessly to my network and phone home OK. Software version is 8.0.1a-01-2-648. Currently, there is a "Pending Restart" for 2 AM tomorrow morning.

While I was using the old Series 2 ST, I purchased three classic NHL Hockey games from Amazon Unbox. These downloaded to the old S2 just fine and are still on the hard drive. I'd like to re-download these to the new S3. I've refreshed the list of DVRs at Amazon/unbox and the new one now shows up. I've also told Unbox to download to the new DVR.

However, I still don't see "Download Movies..." etc on the Find Programs list and the downloads haven't started yet. Nor do I see them in the "To Do" list or "Recording History" lists. Am I missing something or will these downloads happen after the restart?

Thanks,

They can start downloading after the restart, when the proper software version for Unbox will be active. You can force a restart now if you want.

Thanks, guys. I did that and it certainly did change things. I now have "Down TV and Movies" on the Find menu. Apparently, I didn't have the Spring '07 software update but do now.

Now what's happening is that while I can go to the Unbox menu, scrolling down through it is painfully slow. Roughly, a minute or so between pressing the down arrow and seeing an onscreen response. Also, it appears the downloads are trying to start; the blue light on the panel comes on and in the download history I can now see that attempts are being made but are failing because the download speed is "too slow."

My last attempt to connect to Tivo was successful and my signal strength hovers around 92% give or take 2%.

One other thing occurred to me: when I got this working with my old Series 2 ST, I had to open up various ports in my firewall to TCP and UDP traffic. I would presume open any other ports for this to work with the series 3, would I? As far as my firewall goes, what worked with the Series 2 should work for the Series 3, wouldn't it?

Thanks,

As long as you opened the ports for your LAN in general and not the IP of the S2 only, yep.

Thanks to all who responded, but I still can't get this to work as it did with my S2. I spent an hour on the phone today with two Tivo support reps and neither could figure it out. I see someone else as also reported a similar problem with an S3 here on this board.

As anyone gotten S3's to receive Unbox or TivoCast downloads? Just curious as to how widespread this issue may be.

Thanks for the tip, but that doesn't seem to be the problem, either. The correct last five digits of my AMEX card and the expiry date still show up in the "Edit or Delete Payment Method" screen. :(

I don't know about any of the rest of you. But I didn't have to open up any ports on my Router for my S3 to work. It is able to do all of it's current functions just fine. We will see when they activate MRV/TTG though.

I even have a slingbox classic & slingbox pro. For those I did have to activate port forwarding for those 2 ports that those devices use. (Because I changed the "normal" ports that the slingbox uses)

I do have a High end Linksys router. (RVS4000), I don't know if that has any bearing or not.

Same here. ididn't have to open up any ports. It works fine without making any changes with my Dlink router or the FIOS Actiontec router. My girlfriend has a NEtgear at her house and I didn't have to change any settings in that either.

I have a Belkin Router and never had to open any ports for my S2 or S3s or for MRV. I've downloaded tons of stuff from Amazon to my S3.

Is it possible there is something else going on on the network that is impacting performance? Is the teenager next door using your network to download movies? ;)

I'm with jsnow, the problem is almost certainly with your LAN, and specifically WIRELESS!

You absolutely need to hard-wire your Tivo with CAT5E, if only temporarily, to see if all your problems go away.

I certainly can't ignore that possibility, but I do discount it for two reasons. First, I received the S3 Friday evening and began setting it up Saturday AM. The last time downloads worked was to the S2 on either Thu. or Friday during the day. I don't remember exactly which.

As for someone hopping on my network, I don't broadcast my ESSID, I do MAC address filtering, and WEP. While I realize any network could be cracked, I do know that others near me are broadcasting their ESSIDs and not encrypting, etc. In other words, if there really were a teenager nearby who's into doing that, my network's not the lowest hanging fruit.

Just for grins, I ordered something new from Amazon and tried to send it to the S3. It failed as expected. I then moved the wireless adapter back to my old, trusty S2 and told Amazon to send it there. It's now downloading as I write this. So, either there's some weird setting in my networking setup (S3 or router) that I'm just not seeing or it's some weird bug with Tivo.

Have you hooked up your S3 via WIRED networking yet to check the problem? IT may be something with the wireless.

Did you check your router? If you only opened the ports for the S2 and not as a blanket for the LAN, that's the issue. Most home routers are configured to allow *all* outbound traffic (which this is - the TiVo connects *out* to Amazon and pull the content down) so there is no need to open ports - sounds like you have yours set to be more paranoid and block outbound traffic unless you allow it. Odds are when you added a rule to enable this on the S2 it was set to allow it from the S2s IP only.

Regularly, for both - not a problem.

Well, I'm glad to report that I got this to work last night. Apparently, when configuring the S3's network parameters, I chose "Static IP" addressing rather than "Dynamic" and then assigned an IP address to the S3. The S2, which always worked, I'd set up as Dynamic all along. It's been some time since I set up the S2 for wireless, so I can't say why I did things differently, I just did.

So, when I noticed this last night, I switched the S3 to Dynamic, rebooted it, and now all is well. Unbox content and TivoCasts come in just as they always did. I understand the differences between the two forms of addressing, I just don't understand why it would make a difference, especially as the S3 could phone home and download the 8.3 update just fine. But apparently, it did.

Thanks to all who responded. Your help and assistance was greatly appreciated.
