I finally am getting around to buying TiVo.
Informing myself and figuring out what I can do with TiVo I have one question that I have not been able to find an answer for.

The situation is the following:

I live in an apartment complex that offers free internet either wireless or wired. Therefore I do not have a router in my apartment. It is said that I have to hook up my TiVo to my home network router to get it connected to the internet and to have it hooked up to my network.
I may be missing a simple point but it is possible for me to just hook the TiVo up to my wired internet port (which is an ethernet port) in my apartment and not a router and connect the TiVo to the internet that way. Will that allow me to online schedule shows and use unbox?

To clarify, there is no router in my apartment and I m connected to the internet via an apartment complex wide internet connection.

Like I said I may just miss a simple point but I would appreciate if someone could help me out and clarify for me if I can use those services with this network setup.

The router is not in your apartment, but it sounds like it's definitely *somewhere.* RoyK sounds right to me.

Well the problem is that I do have to login when I for example try to connect a computer through the ethernet for the first time. I am asked to specify my mac address which then is authorized to use the internet. Is there a way that I can set up my TiVo with a certain mac address or anything, so I can connect to the internet?

Depending on which model Tivo you get (Series 3, HD, and Seires 2 DT have built in Ethernet adapter), you should be able to plug your Tivo into the network jack. The Tivo's with built in Ethernet ports will have a unique MAC address that you should be able to register from your computer. This will work as long as it is a one time registration, and not something you have to do each time you log on. If you get a Tivo without an Ethernet adapter, you'll need an approved USB to Ethernet adapter, www.tivo.com/adapters . The USB adapter will have a unique MAC address that you can register. It's also possible that your building may block some of the ports that the Tivo communicates over.
