The Series 1 does not have any networking capability on its own. You would need something like a Turbonet card to get it connected to the internet for calls to the mothership but your other boxes will not be able to see it and it won't be able to see them. Same with S1 to PC - no go.
TiVo series 1 and a DTA
Due to my local Comcast going all digital, I have had to make my Tivo S2 dual tuner control a Comcast Scientific ATL digital box (with remote blaster). While the dual tuner ability is now severely limited (can't record two digital channels above ch20 at the same time), the setup works.
I also have two free DTA (digital transport adapter) boxes in other rooms. The only really get the basic cable TV service (no PPV, On-Demand & other basic digital channels), but they work fine too.
I had thought about trying to hook up this S2 DT to a DTA, but it only has coaxial outputs. Therefore, it would essentially be a single tuner DVR. I then wondered if I could maybe just get a much older, single tuner TiVo off ebay or something. possibly a Series 1 or 2.
However, I am not sure what brand these Comcast DTA boxes are in order to get the codes & set it up properly with a TiVo. Any idea what brand I should use for set up purposes?
Also, if I get a series 1, can it somehow be networked to my other two TiVos (S2 & S3) for multi-room viewing? Can a Series 1 be set up somehow for online recording as well?

It seems to me that as far as the S2DT is concerned you are considering two options: 1. Use it as a single tuner TiVo or 2. putting in a closet. Why is option 2 and acquiring another single tuner TiVo preferable?

Are there Series 2 TiVos with only one tuner & an ethernet port? If I want to integrate it with a DTA, no need for a dual tuner model so I'm thinking the older (but still compatible), the better.
And no plans to get rid of the current S2DT setup. I just want to keep it with my SA full digital box since it works (w/ the remote blaster). Series 2 TiVos don't have an integrated Ethernet port. Aren't your current S2's attached to the network using USB Ethernet adapters?
If you need a Tivo with an ethernet port, just get another dual tuner S2, they are the only S2 models with that feature.

TiVo never wrote any MRV software for them, just the S2s and above.

You can do that with any S2 or later. It's just that most S2's need a USB Ethernet adapter, the S2DT being the sole exception. The installation of a Turbonet card and the correct hacks might get you MRV on an S1 but is probably not worth the effort/expense. Using the S2DT is probably your best bet. You can find them for $20 - $25 without lifetime and you don't have to fart around with USB adapters.
Almost every DTA made (Comcast, Motorola, Pace, Scientific Atlanta, Suddenlink & Thomson) uses IR code 10104. Just pick Comcast and you should be fine.
